Beg your pardon, Pete. No photography allowed at NRA HQ Range.

I stopped dilly-dallying and finally got my tax stamp. I sold the POF lower and bought another LMT Defender lower to register. The POF was nice, but it was Teflon coated, and I wanted to paint. After the Form 1 came back, I went over to LWRC to have Jesse engrave the lower, and then I ordered an LMT 10.5” upper from Wes at MSTN. After reading about TR’s positive experiences with his LMT shorty, I didn’t really look at any other uppers.

I sprayed the plastic and fiberglass parts (SOPMOD stock, Tango Down rail panels, EOTech battery cover) with Brownells Aluma-Hyde II in Earth Brown. I sprayed the metal parts with Brownells Gun-Kote in Dark Earth Brown. I then baked the parts in a large toaster oven and gas grill outside. I did not have the guts – or is it balls? – to use the oven in the kitchen.

The colors don’t exactly match, but it’s likely my fault. It was my first time, and I was using the rattle cans, so I was afraid of over-spraying. Some of the metal parts could use another coat or two, and next time I will pull the delta ring assembly off the barrel. LMT coats their buffer tubes with some kind of anti-friction material, the same as inside their upper receivers, so I left it alone. The Gun-Kote goes on warm, de-greased metal parts very well. It’s very hard, but it will chip (again, my fault, likely a curing issue). I did discover that it’s less likely to chip if you don’t drop the upper receiver when taking it out of the oven – oohh, ouch, hot!

I zeroed it and ran some mags through it today using surplus M855 green tips. One or two malfunctions, but I did not do a good job of culling out the dented cartridges, and I was also trying out some CProducts stainless steel mags for the first time, so I’m not blaming the upper. It is a blast to shoot, a little bit louder, but it didn’t bother me at all. Perhaps I was too busy feeling the blast from the Springfield M1A in the next lane over.

- LMT Defender lower, single-stage trigger, SOPMOD, H buffer, Ergo SureGrip, Magpul trigger guard
- LMT 10.5” upper with YHM Phantom 5C2 FH
- CMT BCG upgraded by Denny’s Guns, LMT CH with PRI military latch
- Surefire M73 rail, Tango Down rail panels, Dieter CQD
- EOTech 511 on a LaRue Mount, with LaRue BUIS
- Surefire KL3 LED head and clickie tailcap, and generic body on a LaRue offset mount

Just finished my GAP (GA Precision) rifle.

Left Handed Remington 700 Short Action trued/lapped by GA Precision
Schneider 1:12 M40A3 stainless barrel finished @ 24''
Badger Ordnance Recoil lug
Badger Ordnance Tactical Knob
Seekins 20MOA Pictanny Rail
Stock BDL bottom metal w/ mag extender (soon upgraded w/ Badger DBM)
Trigger job to 2 1/2 lbs
bolt spirl fluted by Karl from Kamfeld Custom
McMillan A4 stock and adjustable spacer system
Chambered in .308 Win

Either way, its my first full custom rig. Plan on finishing it off with a Leupold Mark4 or a USO SN3. Getting married next month and the old lady will kill me if I order a 1-2k scope after building this stick. Got a SS 10X42M to cover me for the mean time. It came out so damn clean I am having second thoughts of taking the rattle can to it. Either way, thanks to those who helped me with some of the components a while back.

This seems to be a pretty nice conversion. I don't know much about them. I ask my local Garand expert and he did not collect them or knew much about them either.

This may have been a civilian conversion. I am not sure of the cost of the rifle. It is also in 7.62 Nato. I have not checked to see if the barrel is a 30-06 with a sleave to convert it to a 7.62 Nato or it is a 7.62 Nato chambered barrel.

HOLLiS - Are you sure that's not a BM-59? It's been years since I've seen one but your picture doesn't look like any civilian Garand conversion I'm aware of. (If it is a BM-59 your expert needs to "expand" his expertise a bit. ) Peregrino

I don't think it was. It may have used Beretta parts. The receiver, seems to be reweld. It was reblued, a steel receiver with more iron (cheaper to make receivers) will be a plum color with normal bluing salts, This one is plum except in the middle of the receiver, Where it may have been welded using a better Steel welding rod.

The Berettas, I beleived where marked Berettas too.

Thank you for the input. It is a puzzel.

Looks like a civilian BM-59 to me too, but the mag is not a Beretta mag.

TR, thank you for the input. The Mag is for a M1A1, possible Korean manufacturer.

I found this article:

http://battlerifles.ambackforum.com/...a916864a1fe6c6

The rifles seems to have been a Kit rifle from Beretta parts. It may have been done by a individual or gunsmith. There were several companies that made those rifles in the States from Kits. Often using re-welded receiver. It the maker would have parkerized it, the re-weld would not have been apparent.
I have blued some receivers on "economy" rifles and they can come out very beautiful with the plum coloring. The barrels being made of harder steel will blue normally.

You're one of those guys that isn't having fun unless he's jumping off a building with his hair on fire aren't you? It's a good looking weapon from here, but if you showed up in the next lane over from me in an indoor range, you'd be the biggest asshole ever

Good times,
blake

FN SPR A1a POF 415

Here's a pic of me with my new appendage, the POF 415. Please forgive the silly bed time outfit, it was my first hour with the weapon put together and I was a touch excited No optics yet, I've put enough money stress into the equation for a while (so says the Home 6 element). The new gas piston system is extremely impressive, I have found no loss of accuracy; no variance in recoil. Had 1 hiccup from a magazine error; tested the same mag in two carbines with the same result...HK mag, odd huh? POF makes a good weapon...be prepared to wait for it though! I originally ordered mine in the 3rd week of Dec 06 and didn't get her in my hands till the last week of May 07. I was supplied a free front sight for waiting, and they do military discounts guys and gals. My setup is running great and my only complaint so far is that the OLY-arms safety selector that I used has a little play (looseness). BTW the specs:

POF 415 upper reciever (semi-only)
FTA (fast target aquisition) hood front sight
Matech flip up rear sight (Thank you uncle sam )
MIAD pistol grip
ACE SOCOM adjustable butt-stock
RRA 2 stage National Match trigger
MEGA multi-caliber lower reciever model GATOR
OLY-Arms lower reciever parts
HK steel mags

Also here is a link to me shooting my FN SPR A1a for the first time. I recorded this to watch for bad habits which I highly recommend. Taught myself a thing or two about flinching, trigger squeeze and the like. During other more tedious recordings I tracked follow throw, blinking ETC. This is truly an amazingly smooth and accurate weapon. Don't knock the crome-plated bore till you try it, my groups have been sub-MOA when I don't do something stupid like flinch, hold breath to long etc. etc. Night Force makes one hell of a scope BTW.

Thats awesome, But are there any darker blues for the grips...

Now there's a weapon that can throw a fireball.

Outside of the DSA OSW, that would be my 1st choice for a compact .308 launching divice. Beautiful weapon.

Interesting toy, but I fail to see the utility of a shorty 7.62.
