MOVING
I finally sold my house and have another under contract. Same town different neighborhood, bigger yard (.75 of an acre), 2200 sq, .5 mile from the forest and quiet!!!
Its been several years since I have had to move so I have forgotten a lot of moving tips and tricks.
I'm looking for any tips or tricks to make it easier and faster. I've done the google thing and have a small stragety in place but I'm looking for good done and dirty space and time saving was to get it done.
Thanks for your time.

What areas specifically would you like tips on? How to pack boxes, load a truck? I did embarkation while I was in the Corps and I have moved quite a bit as a civilian. I just don't want to waste your time or insult your intellegence by giving you advice you already have.

Anything.
You won't insult my intellegence. There is always a better way to do something. Maybe you know a better way to pack a truck or a box that I don't.
Basically throw it all out there lets see what sticks to the wall.

You'll want to pack breakable items such as glassware in a manner that prevents them from breaking in transit.
How's that?

tips for moving
Before you move the boxes and furniture organize it. Have a place picked out for it. Example: bedroom things are going in this bedroom, these boxes are going in this room. Then move each room at a time instead of grabbing things from all over the house and packing them for transport. When you get to your destination unpack your pov and put the box or item in the room already designated. Not a great tip, but hope it helps.

Label all boxes on multiple sides so you can see what things are regardless of what side of the box you are able to read.

The one place I am dreading is the Garage.

Hi Smokin Joe,
Since I don't know what method you are using ( do it yourself, or hiring a mover to do it all, etc. etc.), I just thought I'd mention that a family member loved using a POD.

Get a piece of grid paper and make a scale floorplan of the home (or use the plans, if you have them).
Look at all of your furniture and lay it down on the plan BEFORE you pack anything.
If it was heavy or inconvenient to move, it doesn't get any easier after finding out that it doesn't fit.
Agree with marking boxes on multiple sides with contents and where you want it put in the new house. Put required cords, cables, remotes in the box with the respective items.
Movers are very simple, literal creatures. If there are three bedrooms, better number them, or everything will wind up in the wrong one. Many are not trustworthy, if the price is right. Pack your valuables, fragile items, and firearms/weapons/ammo/meds and haul it yourself. Keep important papers and essential items for a few days in your car.
Move/board/relocate pets before the movers come.
Videotape the current contents to prove to insurance that you had it and it worked.
One person stays in the front yard as traffic control/inventory, the other directs them inside the house and tells them what to unpack where.
Once you get there, set a goal of unpacking X number of boxes per day/week, and stick with it.
Just a few thoughts.

Thanks, good idea to stash all the non-essential crap prior to move day.
Most if not all moving will be DIY...

My best piece of advice is to reiterate TR's point of making sure you have a schedule on UNpacking. Taking things out of a house is easy... but it's also awful easy to, when you arrive, just say, "Aw, we'll just unpack those boxes tomorrow" before you go take a nap.
(Then they end up still in boxes a year later.)

Reverse planning and de-confliction with the wife of what is more important and what comes first. I'm big on getting the bed up and assembled (minus sheets) to crash on when you're done unloading and big items are out of the way. Nothing like finishing moving and starting the un-packing at 0-dark-30 and getting tired, then having to struggle with a bed just to sleep. My preference is to crash where I land, but it's not the wife's. Household 6 dictates my sleeping arrangements, so I don't argue.
Big stuff out first to keep from carrying stuff over and through. Less strain and pain on important parts.
Square stuff and easily stackable stuff up front and in the truck first. Loose items like furniture last.
Drop cloths for grassy areas to set furniture on if you don't plan on wrapping it first. I had the fun task of removing grass stains from the skirt of a khaki colored couch after a move. Not fun!!! Also good for keeping the rain off of your goodies.
If you have kids, I'm of no help except to state please find someplace safe for them to keep them out of harm's way. Nothing like someone putting a china cabinet down on a kid because you couldn't see them when they want to show you something neat.

To possibly ease the task of packing and moving there are a couple questions to ask:
Is most of your stuff old and need replacement? If yes, five gallons of acetone and a match is all you will need.
Do you want your wife to make the move with you? If yes, hire a first class moving company. If no, five gallons of acetone and a match is all you need.
Do you still have all your coveted grade school and high school trophies and awards? All your SF and Army keepsakes? Your favorite sweatshirt from 30 years ago? If the answer is yes, hire a first class moving company but I bet it will cancel out question number two, your wife will not be coming along, she has other plans.
All other situations: get a POD or three, hire a front end loader, jam them full and get out of there before the buyers change their minds.
That's my contribution and I am sticking to it.
