NDD,

If anything I would think those two studies (1998 and 2001, respectively) understate the education level. It is my impression from both the numerable news stories on the topic, and from some conversations with people at Houston MEPS, that the military has seen a significant influx of college educated professionals since 9/11 (even into the enlisted ranks). The data from both studies predates that event.

Could be and it wouldn't surprise me. Problem with good numbers like the ones in ktek's link is that they take quite a while to produce.

Your welcome NDD. I was a little surprised after 9/11 when I checked in with the local Army recruiter, he said they didnt see much of a surge in enlistments at all, except for prior service. That was however only a few weeks after 9/11.

At Houston MEPS while I was in-processing, I found myself sitting in front of the doctor (an old Korean era Navy vet) for the physical exam. He looked at my paper work and said, "another one of you." I asked him what he meant by that. He said that since 9/11 he'd seen a ton of prior-service guys, mostly infantry types, who were leaving behind good jobs and families to go back in. He said many of them had been out for many years, had gone to college, etc, and were just wanting to go back to their old units. He said it was one of the most moving parts of his job to see that since 9/11, and that it made him feel better about the future of America. He was obviously both sincere, and emotionally moved.

LOL, and I'm sitting there in my boxer shorts thinking: don't let this dude ask for a shoulder to cry on.
