Saved mainly by the fact that he had someone there shooting video (his Dad) who rushed him to the hospital while he managed (or at least partially managed) to pinch the vascular injuries closed while trying to remain conscious.
Lessons learned: Bring someone with you when you go to the range. Bring a trauma kit that you have training on (and your range buddy knows how to use) and have it readily accessible. Combat park if possible, or at least have a clear path to the highway. Know the route to the nearest trauma care facility, and have at least one phone with 911 service. Observe safety warnings for weapons and ammunition. Do not assume compatibility. Remember, eye and ear pro can save more than just your hearing.
