France in Iraq

I keep seeing desert uniformed people in the Green Zone with the French flag on their shoulder. Anyone know what role they are playing here in Iraq?

jokes expected, of course. Who can resist a chance to clown on some frogs, but serious responses should surface as well.

There are no French troops in Iraq. You are probably misreading the flag.

Negative.

I'm not saying there are French troops in Iraq, but there are definately personel wearing the easily identifiable French flag on the left shoulder of their desert camoed jacket. Iv'e seen them go through our TCP a few times. An individual from our embassy said they might be here with a NATO group, but he did not know to what extent their role here is. They could very well be of the civilian varity.

The NATO group is the NATO Training Implementation Mission-Iraq. Twelve NATO members have sent personnel to Iraq as part of this mission: the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Turkey, Denmark, Canada, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Poland.
