Special Operations Warrior Foundation

Hey guys - figure it couldn't hurt to cross-post this from over at SOCNET so here goes:

http://www.specialops.org/events.asp#Cannonball

I'm participating in a Cannonball-style (daily time-trial) race across the country 10-19 September 2006 and I'm raising donations to go to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

I'll be riding a 1964 Vespa I've built myself: 2-stroke 235cc motor, 32mm Mikuni carb, carbonfiber reed valve, expansion chamber, external quick release race tank, etc, etc.

The Foundation, as many of you know, provides college grants (not loans) to children of Special Ops personnel who were killed in the performance of their duties (training or in the stink), so it's a worthy cause.

To donate: go to the site (http://www.specialops.org/events.asp#Cannonball), scroll down, and click Make a Contribution. If you want it to be on behalf of the Cannonball you have to put a message in the "Notes" section that your donation is on behalf of the gay scooter thing, the cannonball thing, or Mike Garrett (me). If you forget then they still get the money, it just doesn't get listed on the funds I've raised - no biggie.

None of the money comes to me. I am paying for everything else (gas, two-stroke oil, food and hotels, shipping my bike to Portland, flying to Portland, on my own.

There's more info on Socnet, to include the route if anyone is buying beer when I pass through. http://www.socnetcentral.com/vb/showthread.php?t=62055

Thanks.

I am not really on these boards that often but will check back from time to time - I can always be reached through Socnet as well.

PS: edited to add Are you going to have a support vehicle following you ? ( I noticed Jimbo's offer on the SOCNET thread.) Wondering if you are going to have computer access along the route for updates .......a friend has his 2nd Grade class follow the Iditerod. I'm going to mention your route "loosely following the Oregon Trail" to him.

I am going to try to bring my laptop if I have space for it and will make updates at night from the hotels if my bike doesn't fall apart during the days - I am going to have to tear down the carburetor at least twice to up jet and then downjet through the Rockies.

There is a support vehicle following in the case of breakdowns, but it's not there to carry equipment - everything (spare tires, spare oil, tubes, and whatever parts I want to take, including tools) is carried on the bike.
