For The First Time, Hackers Have Used A Refrigerator To Attack Businesses

Now your appliances can send crank emails, and much, much more.

Think of the opportunity hackers now have -- turning off your furnace in winter / AC in summer, hot water when you are in the shower, changing channels to MSNBC, unlocking your front door -- letting the dog out and the burglar in. warming up my "cold beer", and, horror, melting my world famous double vanilla ice cream.

For The First Time, Hackers Have Used A Refrigerator To Attack Businesses
Security researchers at Proofpoint have uncovered the very first wide-scale hack that involved television sets and at least one refrigerator.

hackers broke into more than 100,000 everyday consumer gadgets, such as home-networking routers, connected multi-media centers, televisions, and at least one refrigerator

The Internet of Things, is a new term in the tech industry that refers to a concept where every device in your house gets its own computer chip, software, and connection to the Internet: your fridge, thermostat, smart water meter, door locks, etc.

The hack happened between December 23, 2013 and January 6, 2014, and featured waves of malicious email, typically sent in bursts of 100,000, three times per day, targeting enterprises and individuals worldwide.

The FBI’s credibility was murdered by a sniper on Ruby Ridge; its corpse was burned to ashes outside Waco; soiled in a Delaware PC repair shop;. and buried in the basement of Mar-a-Lago..

Yeah all of that convenience crap looks cool....in room cameras so you can check your house etc.....all of that can be hacked so you might star in your own movie trying to put your refrigerator back 'on line'.
"Hey Honey, would you reboot the fridge".
This really 'neat' stuff needs to be thought thru.

I vaguely remember an announcement last year about hackers finding weaknesses in cars: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/...puter-systems/

Better send in the G-Force!

The "internet of things" has got to be the worst idea in a long, long time. The minor gee-whiz factor of checking your thermostat temperature from your smart phone is grossly outweighed by the fact that it has almost no built in security and is connected to the internet.

Nothing good can come from your oven being discoverable through Google.
