RIP Greg Rodriquez

My wife and I hunted with Greg two years ago on a ranch in Texas. It was my wife's first hunting trip and Greg personally coached her through the taking of her first big game animals. She gained enough confidence then to book her own British Columbia black bear hunt the following spring. His TV show, A Rifleman's Journal, was a cut above most of the hunting shows out there. We will miss his politically incorrect sense of humor and candor and our prayers go out to his family. According to a friend of Greg's, he had just landed in Montana and was visiting a female business colleague at her mother's house to discuss business before heading to his hotel. Speculation to the contrary I've seen on one of the hunting forums is unfounded.

WHITEFISH - There's national attention on a Whitefish neighborhood after an award winning television host was murdered on Thursday evening.
A quiet neighborhood in Whitefish was the scene of a horrific tragedy at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday when a man was fatally shot and a woman was badly beaten. The gunman then fled to his home in West Glacier, where he took his own life.
"About 10:30 I heard what I thought was a gunshot, I was laying in bed, and I wasn't completely sure that's what it was, sometimes we hear guns from across the road," neighbor Kaley Martinson told us.
Whitefish police say in fact, four gunshots were fired on River Lakes Parkway, claiming the life of Gregory Rodriguez, 43, a national sporting TV host and writer for Guns and Ammo magazine. Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dian says when police arrived on scene Rodriguez was already dead.
"I was met at the scene by a female, who came out of the house and said that a male friend of hers had been killed, and that he was in the house. She also said that her husband, was the shooter, and had left the scene with their two-year-old child," Dial said during a news conference.
The child was later found safe at a relative's home. The shooter, who then took his own life at his home in West Glacier, has been identified as Wayne Bengston, 41 Whitefish Police say Bengston's motive is unclear, as they don't believe Rodriguez was romantically involved with Bengston's wife.
"[Bengston] came into the house, immediately shot Mr. Rodriguez, and killed him almost instantly, it appears that he pistol whipped his wife, and caused her some substantial injuries," Dial said.
Martinson says her family is shocked by the incident. ""it's very quiet, very peaceful, so....it's was just not typical at all."
Bengston's wife was pistol whipped, suffered a concussion, and was taken to a hospital and released a short time later.
She told Whitefish Police that Rodriguez was in town for business, and that's what their meeting at her mother's house was about. She also told police that she and her husband were not estranged, nor did they have any serious disagreements.
The Whitefish Police Department is still investigating the apparent murder-suicide.
