Peter van Uhm: Why I chose a gun

Peter van Uhm: Why I chose a gun

Peter van Uhm is the Netherlands’ chief of defense, but that does not mean he is pro-war. In this talk, he explains how his career is one shaped by a love of peace, not a desire for bloodshed -- and why we need armies if we want peace.

I am a huge fan of TED, and saw this a few months ago.

Interesting talk he gives, and it is amazing how he is right in regards to the fact that some of the audience members do not seem comfortable being in the same room as the weapon either.

He makes some good arguments for logical military service over the persona of joining the military for"insert bullshit reason here"

I would like to see more military presenting points of view on TED.

Imagine one of our elegant QPs in all their splendor presenting on:
  • What the Second Amendment is really about and why every country should consider it.
  • The difference between American Special Forces and Special Operational Forces.
  • What Unconventional Warfare is and is not.
  • Making the best use of your COIN.
  • Why you should hire a veteran.

There are so many topics that might benefit from an experienced QP perspective. TED has some great presentations and a QP presentation would IMO enhance many a program. Go for it !

This was discussed last year after the speech: LINK

I did not like his assertion that the government must have a monopoly on violence. He made no concession that people may need to protect themselves from either their government or individuals that would do them harm.
