The Power of Cool
IMO one of Hanson's better articles.
He outlines why conservatives are demonized for certain things, while liberals doing the same are seen as being "cool"

"Cool" article...and quite true. But we see the same evidence almost anywhere in society not just inside politics or among the monied "elite."
That's why I went SF...they were, and still are, the cool-guys.

My $.02
My $.02, I think Mr. Hanson should spend more time on history than social commentary
Is it ground breaking news;
1) Life is not fair
2) Some folks are born with more charisma, this doesn't mean they have more character, just charisma which tends to fool the masses every time.
3) As vapid as the Hollywood types are they aren't important enough to matter.
4) When there is a crisis political and financial elites always try and pin the blame on one another, in a real crisis the public loses faith in both...
5) I'm not on Facebook, I don't know Zuckerberg, If a 28 year old entrepeneur is changing the world, I'm glad he is an American.

"...millions of well-off Americans, from the entering college student to the full professor of law, from the billionaire thief to the president of the United States himself, endlessly chase cool.
And why would they not? Cool is now America’s holy grail that allows the elite and the rich not just to pursue and enjoy nice things, but to damn others who do the same."
Something to think about in this year's national elections cycle.
And so it goes...
Richard

Cool is elusive. An individual can spend their whole life chasing it, chasing something they want, but do not posess. And then, years down the road, though they may be close to cool, the definition changes according to those who decide what is cool and what isn't cool any longer.
What is cool to me, isn't the same that is cool for my dad...my dad is a lot cooler now than he was when I was a rebellious teen. People change, and so does what is defined as being cool.
And then there is this...this is cool:

Pursuing "cool" status is a foolish endeavor.
It's like trying to drive while sitting backwards looking in a mirror.
Being considered "cool" can be addictive and an addict will eventually debase themself in every imaginable way to retain their fix.
Look at hollywood.
Without core convictions to guide them, such a person is owned by the fickle opinion of the social mirror.
Their lack of character eventually finds them out.
Pride goeth before the fall.
