Div I College Hockey tourney - Go Eagles !

It’s that time of year again - Division I college hockey at its finest.

For those who can attend a game live - I highly recommend it for nonstop action.

Check out the following web site for the 16 team bracket - enlarge the pdf if it's tough to read.

http://www.uscho.com/wp-content/pdf/...011bracket.pdf

Overview of college hockey:

I believe that most games are covered live on ESPNU which is a pay channel.

Big Teddy, I share your love for the game, and really enjoy the NCAA tourney. Unfortunately the Golden Gophers are not a part of the field as their season was a disaster. With Minnesota out, I am left to pull for Minnesota-Duluth.

Tied at 2. M(ichigan) go Blue!!
I am a bit concerned about what will happen with the formation of a Big 10 conference in 2013. What will happen to Northern Michigan and Miami of Ohio?

Now that the Big Ten has announced the formation of a B10 only hockey conference that Badgers and Gophers should be in the tournament every year. Michigan can no longer beat up on the sisters of the blind known as the CCHA en route to a tournament bid. Now they will have to earn it. It kills me that my beloved Badgers won't get to play UND in a conference game any longer but that's offset by the prospect of slapping Michigan and OSU around every year and who cares about PSU and MSU.

Certainly some surprises in this year's tournament - below is another interactive bracket feature.

http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/icehockey-men/d1/2011

It appears that the semifinals will be on ESPN2 and the Finals broadcast on ESPN.

At the moment, North Dakota leads Denver 3-1 in the 3rd period.

Later tonight, Notre Dame and New Hampshire play to see who will round out the Frozen Four.

Minn-Duluth and Michigan are already in the semifinals.

Michigan, won the whole thing in 1998 - Minn-Duluth was a runner-up in 1984.

Below, is a list of NCCA Div 1 Champs for the previous 10 years.

NCAA Div 1 Mens Champions

Year Champion Runner-up
2010 Boston College Wisconsin
2009 Boston University Miami
2008 Boston College Notre Dame
2007 Michigan State Boston College
2006 Wisconsin Boston College
2005 Denver North Dakota
2004 Denver Maine
2003 Minnesota New Hampshire
2002 Minnesota Maine
2001 Boston College North Dakota

Ok - North Dakota wins (a powerhouse) and is in the Frozen Four.

Minn-Duluth - in.

Michigan - in.

Now, UNH versus Notre Dame. This game is being played in Manchester, NH - practically a home game for UNH.

Frozen Four is set

Minnesota-Duluth was the first to claim a spot in the Frozen Four, beating Yale 5–3 in the East Regional final on Saturday.

Michigan made it two with a 2–1 victory over Colorado College in the West Regional later Saturday.

North Dakota rolled past Denver 6–1 and into a Frozen Four spot from the Midwest Regional on Sunday.

Notre Dame completed the group by ousting New Hampshire 2–1 on Sunday in the Northeast Regional.

So, Notre Dame and Minnesota-Duluth will play in one national semifinal on Thursday, April 7, and Michigan and North Dakota will square off in the other.

North Dakota should take it all - but there were some serious upsets in this tournament to date - that's why they play the games.

Agreed- North Dakota has looked good, but my Wolverines always show up prepared for a tough game.

Sadly, I miss the glory days of my alma mater, Bowling Green State University. I have fond memories of intramural curling on their dedicated curling rink attached to the hockey rink - a lot of happy (albeit foggy) memories. Curling is so much more fun ater a few barley pops.

I don't doubt that - back in the day we sometimes said the same for pick up hockey games with 4:00 a.m. ice time.

One of our buddies ran the rink. Ah, the good ole days.
