Electronic Toll on Golden Gate Bridge Can Cost Tourists Hundreds
Electronic Toll on Golden Gate Bridge Can Cost Tourists Hundreds
I notice in the story that a number of other places are going this route. Olando still has some people taking money. But for the most part after you drive through it appears to be a system to extract the most money from the unwary tourist.
http://news.travel.aol.com/2011/02/0...ists-hundreds/
'".............But if tourists haven't heard about its existence, they stumble into a pricing trap and are subject to a late payment fee in addition to the cost of the toll. According to the state roads agency, that fee adds AU$12 to $21.50 to the original cost of the toll.
They have three days after passing through the toll to navigate the local telephone system and contact the authorities to pay up, and if they don't understand the rules and miss that deadline, they can get hit with another $100 fine through their rental car agency...................."

Lots of ripoffs out there.
Bought gas at a numbered convenience store. Hop out, open the tank, slide the card, stuff the hose, push the button and juust about to squeeze when . . .
HEY! these damn grades are reversed. Instead of "expensive, more expensive, most expensive" it's reversed.
I'm well-trained -- used to reading left to right -- and that is how I ussually push the buttons. and that's what they hope. "aww it's just a quarter a gallon -- couple of bucks a tank" . . . "your own damn fault it's written big and color coded" (green, red, yellow -- I need to be cautious of the least expensive?).
I asked the attendant if he was a Green Beret. He said Yeah. POSER! Let's bust the whole damn company.

True, and even more so with the State, Counties, and Cities suffering from budget problems.
In an effort to create more revenue the California Deartment of Parks has placed a number of hidden cameras at intersections in parks to catch motorists who roll through stop signs. There was a story in the news about a young woman who took her children to a week long day camp at a park in Los Angeles County and afterwards was sent a fine in the mail for about $1000.00 Every day that she drove through the park she failed to come to a complete stop at a few of the intersections and was caught by the cameras.

I don't feel a bit sorry for her, having almost been a victim (several times) of drivers who practice the "California Roll".

If you don't break laws you don't have to pay fines, if you pass a toll booth and do not pay a toll you have to know your doing something wrong. Not sure I feel sorry for people who break the law when they think no one is looking and then get caught. My whole life I have been told that ignorance is not a defense.

They are trying to collect enough money to build 2 more loops around orlando so, when viewed from space, you will see the micky mouse logo.

FWIW, Golden Gate Transportation District outlines its plans and rationale for the transition here.
IMO, Mr. Cochran misleads his readers by taking a global approach to what might happen at the expense of focusing on the five W's.
