Brig.-Gen. Menard, who told reporters he was trying to put the weapon on safety when he fired two rounds, was at Kandahar Airfield preparing to board a helicopter with chief of defence staff Gen. Walt Natynczyk at the time of the March 25 incident.

Some of the early Cx family had a 3rd burst mode, but I think that was eliminated on the C8. The Cx family are derivatives of the Colt AR family..
If he was fumbling around with the safety, he could have "limp wrist" a couple rounds..

His story does not track with the physical controls of the weapon, and no rounds should have been chambered while still on the airfield.
The selector switch is manipulated with the thumb, the trigger with the index finger.
How would a guy who has been in the Army that long confuse the two?

Maybe he had his trigger finger on the trigger while he tried to flip the safty? First round going off caused him to jolt and fire the second one.
Well the good side of this is he didn't kill a private just standing there doing his job.

I believe that SF is a 'calling' - not too different from the calling missionaries I know received. I knew instantly that it was for me, and that I would do all I could to achieve it. In OSUT if your weapon fires into the sand barrel you are recycled back to the next class and start all over. Maybe they should have just sent him back to OSUT with all of the privates.
