ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Officials say a backpacker shot and killed a grizzly bear with his handgun in Alaska's Denali National Park.

Park spokeswoman Kris Fister says man and woman reported that they were hiking Friday evening when the bear emerged from trailside brush and charged the woman.

Fister says the man fired nine rounds from his .45 caliber, semiautomatic pistol at the animal, which then stopped and walked into the brush.

On Saturday, rangers found the dead bear about 100 feet from the shooting site.

Rangers say it was the first known instance of a grizzly bear being shot by a visitor in the wilderness portion of Denali.

Parks biologists and rangers are investigating the case, trying to figure out whether the backpacker had justification for shooting the bear, said Kris Fister, a park spokeswoman. The parks service was withholding the hiker's name as of Sunday.

Fister's statement read that "it is legal to carry a firearm in the (original) portion of the park, but it is not legal to discharge it."
Grizzly's do a lot of false charges so I am told. Whether a person wishes to wait and see if the bear is serious or just bluffing is a personal question but in a National Park one is much better off first trying pepper spray if one has the time to do so and apparently these people had time.

I am not fixing to swap my S&W 460 for a 1911 anytime soon.

When I was a kid in Alaska, we always carried a .357 when we went fishing. We were told that if a Brownie charged, start shooting and don't stop. The distance that folks usually saw one charging them was less than 40 yards. They can cover that distance in a couple of seconds. Glad they weren't hurt but it's too bad that the animal died. They're magnificent animals.

Magnificent animals...sure. Call me chicken shit, but, if I see a bear running at me down a trail and it's within pepper spray range, I'll sure wish I had a firearm instead.

Just sayin'....

Personally, would prefer a hand grenade.

Given the speed with which a griz attacks a use of force continuum involving:
Boot bells
Harsh words
Pepper spray
Firearm.

might not be practical

A moreeffective course would be "Oh shit! BEAR! Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang:

A friend of mine told me his wife's uncle killed a bear on Kodiak island with a Buck folder. I laughed and told him he was full of shit. Turns out he wasn't.

What I learned the easy way one night last hunting season in Utah was even with a bright flash light and a loaded pistol and knowing some large animals is present you may not get a shot fired before the animal gets to you.

Of course I am so self trained to identify the target before shooting, that I lost all of the response time trying to figure out what it was that was attacking me there in the dark. That is good and bad in that you don't wind up shooting somebody or something you wish you hadn't shot but the downside is the the first blood on the ground is going to be yours. If a person can't tolerate some of his own blood on the ground then he should not be a member of this forum. Also goes to my philosophy of not having a loaded gun in my home (out camping by myself is different issue)

Turned out my night time attackers were a couple of stray and hungry cattle dogs that had been cast aside by some worthless rancher in Utah who was grazing cows on public land. I fed them and they hung out at camp for a while.

Huh, some years ago the only talking would have been how to cut up the meat, steaks, loins, stew meat, jerk and what seasonings to gather up. Oh, and how it tasted.

Bear Pistol?

IIRC there was an old adage, " The best type of pistol for a Grizzly is one without a frontsight." Why? because when the bear takes it from you it and shoves it up your @ss...

Seriously, the knife story is incredible.
