SAN DIEGO - Hundreds of kids from military families in Arizona thought they were going on a surfing excursion next month. But at the last minute, their funding was pulled.
Kayla and Marissa Bennett had a lot to look forward to next month. They signed up for a surf camp trip to San Diego.
But now that trip is in jeopardy. A main sponsor had to back out, due to the economy, and couldn't make its donation to fund the camp -- a donation of $148,000.
Nearly 250 kids, at $600 each, were supposed to attend the RecFX Surf Camp on the beach at Camp Pendleton. Matt Augee puts on the camps for children of U.S. military service members. He says it's a great way for military kids to talk about experiences their classmates can't relate to.
Kayla and Marissa's mom Krista says the girls had been looking forward to the trip. It was going to be a chance for them to bond with other teens who know the stress of having a parent in a war zone.
"The camaraderie, much like their father experiences when he's gone -- they get that same camaraderie with friends that they meet," she says.
RecFX Surf Camp needs to come up with nearly $150,000 in the next few weeks to pay for all those kids to go.
