another lawyer story
The small town is getting ready for their annual charity drive, and the committee is making its plans and formulating a campaign when one of the volunteers mentions the town's most prominent attorney, the lawyer Smith. The discussion continues and none of them can ever remember Smith helping out the effort, financially or otherwise. Given the man's obvious and tremendous means, they select three members to approach him for a contribution.
The members come hat in hand to the lawyer's office. Smith mentions that he is very busy, but if they can keep it short, he will entertain them.
The spokesman points out the tremendous good that comes from the drive, the number of people helped, and asks lawyer Smith if he might find it in his heart to make a generous donation?
Smith asks, "You don't know a thing about my situation, do you?"
The spokesperson says "no"
Smith: Well you don't know that 2 years ago my 82 year-old mother was struck by a car? She spent two weeks in ICU. As a result of that accident she is permanently paralized, has used up all her MEDICARE entitlements and still has medical care bills of $17.000 a month?
The spokesperson says, "We are sorry, we had no idea"
Smith: Well, that's not all, my younger brother is in need of a kidney transplant and due to his rare blood type, he's been waiting 6 years for a donor. He's not able to work, his wife left him taking everything and the man has no means of support.
The spokesperson says, "My God, that is terrible"
Smith continues, "My 22 year old daughter is hearing impaired and needs contining vocational education, just to be able to function..."
"Sir, sir, sir", interupts the spokesperson. We are sorry for your troubles and to take up your time..."
Smith, "And I don't give them a dime, what makes you think I want to give you anything?"
