Wasabi mashed potatoes are good too, now if I could only get the Q' Shack in Durham to deliver BBQ to San Francisco....

Holly when I was a kid growing up. No visit home to Mobile, Ala., for my Mom was complete till she and I had a dog at the Dew Drop Inn on Old Shell Road.
Foot long, kosher dog, chili, mustard, onions, coleslaw and shredded cheese.
They made thier own buns. Darn, am hungry just thinking about it.
Dad did a burger and a PBR. I got rc with peanuts already inside.

New England twist to the chicken soup solution....Chowder, simple and clear, none of this junk out of a can....
Sea Clams picked up off the beach after a storm, sea water, potatos, celery and pepper....

That kind of looks like a picnic food list minus the sandwiches.
Food that reminds me of my child hood is more like kimchi, bulgogi, and cheese pizza.

RC as in RC Cola? It comes with peanuts...?
I prefer the Chicago style dog myself. But I'd say my all favorite comfort food was a cup of tomato soup and a grilled cheese (made with Velveeta cheese on white bread) sammich. I loves me some grilled Velveeta cheese sammiches. But I next to never eat processed cheese and I can't remember the last time white bread passed my lips.
My new comfort food is smashed sweet potatoes. Yum!

Yes RC cola, in the south, back in the day, we put spanish peanuts in the bottle and drank and ate at the same time.. Dew Drop will or did put them in on request and the waittress would ask if you wanted peanuts in your RC. It is mosdef a Southern thing.
Smashed sweet pototos are super, lots of real butter and brown sugar.
I make them in the microwave. Try the Korean sweet potatoes too.. red on the outside, white inside. Same flavor though.

Macaroni and cheese is good. But not just any mac & cheese.
There's an old recipe I like.
It starts with a simple white sauce, using some butter and flour mixed into a roux. Then milk is added, and after that Velveeta (with apologies to Gypsy!) is melted into the mix.
Then, I pour it all over the cooked macaroni, and top it with grated cheddar cheese, and add a further topping of crushed saltine crackers. Then I bake it, and serve it hot. My secret ingredient is about 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to add a subliminal (but not easily identified) hint of flavor.
With some fresh fruit...strawberries, perhaps...it makes an ideal dinner. It's even better on a chill evening.

Interesting. Kind of sounds good in a weird way.
I've given up the brown sugar and use just a wee bit of butter. I actually am to the point that I enjoy them plain...they're so good!

That sounds like a good recipie. I always made my mac and cheese with Velveeta as well. I know this is going to sound weird...but I used to also add oregano in to the mix.

If you like them plain then make french fries out of them. I used to use sweet potato in tempura too.
I make 'french fries' out of Eggplant, carrots and sweet potato.
The local to me, Latin markets carry a dark brown sugar that is formed in lumps that are wrapped in corn husks, that I use on french toast and sweet potato. It is one of the few things I still do with sugar.
Yellow crookneck squash is a comfort food for me. Brown a slice of bacon in the pan, set aside, slice up the squash add to the pan and a small amt of fresh onion. Fill pan with water and set on low.. crumble the bacon and stir in. Pepper, not to much and a bit of salt and cook on low till the squash is cooked. Butter, and salt to taste. I just ate a whole bowl full. I guess the prime rib can wait to get cooked for breakfast in the morning with eggs and grits.

I'm no Luddite
For me, comfort food consists meals that have two or more of the four basic food groups: - Caffeine
- Sweet
- Fried
- Pork
Examples include-- - Carnitas and a can of coca cola
- Tonkatsu with curry and a can of coca cola
- Any coffee based beverage and a bottle of coca cola
