Lobster (Atlantic Coast)

I recently took a 11 Day princess cruise that covered the Canadian and East coast ports. Of course , we took tours in all of the ports of call. As a part of two of the tours, we were served a lobster lunch.

The first one was in Halifax, NS. It was served cold. My wife thought it was the best she had tasted cold. I had never had it served cold, but I did enjoy it.

The other lobster lunch was in Bar Harbor, ME. (Bar Harbor Lobster Bake.) This lobster was served hot, right out of the pot. (Prior to the lobster, they also served hot mussels, boy were they good! As many as you wanted!) I decided that I liked the hot lobster better then the cold...but they were both excellent in their way.

How do you guys & gals like your East coast lobsters?

Lobster Pic #1 will be Halifax, NS & #2 will be Bar Harbor, ME

Never tried it cold. Always right out of the pot, or cut up into steaks and grilled. But as long as you've got the 2 "B's" that go with bugs, Beer and Butter (and lots of it), it sounds okay.

This place has great Maine lobster and will ship them live straight to your doorstep-- a few extra bucks but nice for a special occasion.

Steamed hot with butter and lemon. When I was a kid my dad was stationed at Brunswick NAS in southern Maine. On weekends sometimes we would go to the beach and dig clams in the morning for dinner that night. For lunch we would go to one of the roadside stands for a lobster or clam roll. Hot buttered lobster in a split top hot dog bun.

At $5 a piece I would be eating lobster every week. Thats a sweet deal!

No kidding, $5 for lobster and it would be on the menu damn near every night.

I have had it cold but really did not care for it much. When it comes to mussles, I love them and had some of the best ever when I was staying in Portland a few years back for a brewing conference. They had steamed them with an American Wheat beer and I could not get enough of them.

Squidly, you had hot lobster rolls? Never heard of that one. Usually, the roll (a top split hot dog bun) is toasted, but its filled with a bed of iceburg lettuce and, if you go to the right place, large, walnut-sized chunks of chilled claw and tail meat mixed with a dollop of mayonaise, topped with a sprinkle of cracked black pepper. The Red Barn restaurant a few miles outside the traffic loop in Augusta, ME serves one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had, and at a very reasonable price ($6 a shot; not the $12 to 15 you see at stands along Rt 1). Oh, and their seafood chowder is heaven on earth! Live lobster (softshell) was selling for $5.49/lb this summer, so for $5 a pop, you're getting a steal, AM!

Hot buttered is what I recall. This was in the late 60's when I was in elementary school. My mother will remember the name of the place.

I went back to Maine to work in the Bath area in late November/December of 1989. Not much to do after work except eat or go dancing at a set up joint named Tuxedo Junction. Place called "Taste o' Maine" had a triple lobster special every night for $17.95. We gave them a lot of business.

Yup, thats it. 3 chicken lawbstuhs, baked potato or fries, and a salad. We stayed at a hotel in Boothbay Hahbuh called the Flagship. Great restaurant down at the piers (don't recall the name) but they couldn't compete on a quantity basis with "Taste o' Maine" except for the vat of steamers they served for an appetizer. When the job was done I stopped by Simpson's Seafood and picked up two 5 pounders and several quarts of mussels and clams for my Dad in Rappahannock County, VA. By the time I left I could s@*t though a keyhole at 30 paces. Restaurant seafood in AR generally means fried catfish. Ain't quite the same.

Cold lobster is OK if you can't get it hot with butter and lemon.

Sigh!! They all taste alike to me. In Panama we harvested them right out in the bay.

I prefer grilled with lemon butter and cold beer.

In AR crayfish are called Ditch Lobsters. Great Smallmouth bait. Had a few warm water lobsters in St. Croix. Not as sweet as cold water lobster but pretty tasty broiled when stuffed w/ crabmeat.

I really enjoyed the Panama Lobster and the Pacific lobster, and even those Maine psuedo Lobster.

I prefered mine boiled or broiled with lemon butter and LOTS of beer.
