Rochester, MN Travel Info?

They said it was okay to post this question here...

Will be traveling to the Mayo in Rochester, MN, and was curious if anyone had any hotel tips?
There is a plethora of available accomodations on the web, but was thinking of something close to the facility, that was decent for a longer- than- short- term stay?
(Looking on the web, it seems like every other property has good and bad reviews.)

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Holly

Hotel guests from hell...

This is a little long...but a good story...:-)

We have been settled in to a very nice extended-stay hotel here in Rochester.
It has four floors, and about 30 rooms on each floor, so it is perfectly small and comfy.
The last two weeks have sailed by.

However, on Friday around 6pm, there arose a great clatter above us. A lot of banging and crashing that sounded like thunder cracking, and doors slaaming all over the place.
Called the front desk, and let them know.

We were told that the party upstairs said they had "no clue, and were just walking around" etc...

Jump to Saturday, and had to call three more times to register the noise. Since we are booked for six weeks, was told that if it happened again, the upstairs party would be moved to another room.

Could not believe that around 6:30 p.m., it started again, and was louder than ever. I had to call. They told me that the party would be moved in 45 min.

Okay, jump to Sunday, this morning, and breakfast in the downstairs lobby area.
Like every morning, am sitting with my sis and her caretaker,
getting ready for a fun time with fellow guests over waffles and fruit.

First, "He" did a "walk-by" with his unkept little child...
(We're talking preppy late-twenty something overweight man in rumpled sweats, coupled with a very unruly 10 year old.)
Then He went towards the breakfast room and turned to my sis of all people, with a large scowl.

Well, my ears went up. Did not say anything, but waited.
Sure enough, a couple minutes later, back He comes.

This time with full confidence, he strides right next to our round table, and gives my sis the full-on evil glare. At this point, I know it is the folks that were moved, and stand up to prevent any words this man might have for us.
Creepy thing is, he just kept going after his little glare-fit, and I let it go...for now.

Just wondering if anyone here ever had to deal with this type of hotel situaton?

Well, Breakfast is tomorrow at 0700...so we will see.

Holly

I have spent many-many-many nights in Rochester. I worked for Big Blue and
the Rochester plant was the sister plant to mine in Boca.

95% of the time I stayed at the Hoffman House,, which is now the Ramada Inn.

1517 16th St SW
Rochester, MN 55902

(507) 289-8866?
(507) 529-7331

Mid-size, with large bar & restaurant, indoor pool, next to US 52, across
the street from the Apache Mall, easy access from the airport on the south
side of town,, or about 45 minute drive to the twin-cities.

It's been 15 years sence the last trip,, there may be newer hotels &
motels,, but this one was always consistent..

A couple caveats in dealing with MN weather..

1)always park with your front bumper embedded in the snow bank,, snow only
get to 32 deg,, and should allow your radiator fluid to flow..

2)always keep a butane lighter in your pocked,, to heat your car key so you
can unlock the car

3)always get up at least one hour early and go out and start the car,, it
should be warm by the time you bath and eat a good hot meal,, if it doesn't
start, call the car rental for a jump start,, it also takes about an hour..

4)fill your bath tub with water at night before you go to bed,, leave a
towel draped into the water over the side. It will evaporate the complete 40
gallons over night and keep the humidity at an acceptable level,, around
25%.

5)ask for a room by the indoor pool, but be prepared to move for the
weekend,, they have the rooms reserved for years in advance for the locals,,
they treat the place as a vacation resort,, the pool is heated..

6)learn to talk NHL HOCKEY, or prepared to be bored in the bar..

7)learn the local language:
http://www.coolslang.com/in/canadian/index.php

8)if the geese are in town,, visit the lake, down town, wear chemical
boots, the geese shitte is about 2" think, black, & gooey,, but there can be
100,000 in the water,, spectacular when they lift off..

You might think it's funny,, but MN winters(August thru June) are very very cold.

My 1st trip there was in January of 1974, for a one week business trip,, Prior to my arrival, it had been below ZERO for 100 days,, it was so dry I had nose bleeds daily,, when I returned I asked my boss why had he sent me??

He said "I wanted to make sure you didn't ask for a transfer"........

To their benefit,, the people of Rochester are very friendly & gracious,,
it's just to dam cold...

Good Luck,, Dress Warm..

Wink Gift on the 4th of July...

Some of ya'll know about my sis. And I just want to Update:
Due to the progress she has made while at the Mayo the last few months, she has offically been accepted into the Mayo Clinic's Physical Rehabilitation program back in Rochester. Check-In, Aug 6th!

During her 2 month assesment in May & June, she stayed off all meds, began Braille classes, and insisted that she do PT everyday. It got to the point where the Physical Therapists had to stop her, because even though she was exausted, she did not want to stop. She just kept saying her new words, "Walk-On!"

Cannot begin to express my thanks to PS.com.

Thank You all, from both of us, on this 4th of July!
If not for Your example, this miricle would not have happened.

Sincerely,

Holly

Thanks for the update, and the credit, but it appears to me that the real people responsible for this are you and Sis, in conjunction with the staff at Mayo.

Tell Sis that she has done a great job.
