Why not call the person flying the aircraft a pilot?
Why call them an "airman"?

Called him "top gun" twice in the article - those Brits have quite a sense of humor.
Perhaps if he had practiced some touch-and-go's in his girlfriend's backyard like a certain newly-winged RAF pilot, he would not have forgotten his procedures.
