30.06 1917 Eddystone

Question for some of you more proficient gun afficianados.

My Dad gave me a rifle, it's an M1917 Eddystone or was, it was 'sporterized' over the years. The sights have been removed (front and rear) the spot where the rear sights would normally go, has been machined smooth and clean, and the weapon has been re-finished. He never finished getting a scope mount and scope put on it, after he had the intial work done he kind of forgot about the weapon, so it sat for decades. I'd like to put a scope mount on it (it's never had one) and select a good hunting scope for it.

I've cleaned it up nicely, it looks great. The bolt works like a champ. Very smooth. The safety locks properly. He had some trigger work done, I don't know what it's set to, but it's awfully light. I understand that these were good rifles with really strong barrels and actions, it fires nicely, the barrel is in really good shape, nice sharp grooves, no pits that I could see. The wood is a dark walnut, without much of a finish to it, it feels like bare wood, it's clean and smooth, a couple of small dings.

Any suggestions you can give me as to which mount/scope combination would work best with this rifle I would appreciate. Those of you that hunt the west, what range do you normally sight your rifles in for?

Ng M4, tough question, as you stated the receiver has been milled. Finding bases could be the most tricky part. I am a new convert to Burris miltec scopes and Burris rings, I would suggest giving them a good look. I live in Western Oregon, we do have some ranges, but most shooting is sub 100M. On my .338 Win Mag, I sight in at 200M, and with the mil dots I am gtg to 600M.

I have a P17, Winchester excellent shooter. It is the best of my military bolt rifles/iron sights using CPM Greek ammo.
