A man accused of robbing a bank for a second time was arrested Tuesday, then learned that someone stole part of his loot.
About 8 a.m., Fayetteville Police officers got a tip that Joseph Thomas Mulkerin, 46, was at the Boulevard Motel at 4309 Bragg Blvd., said Jamie Smith, police spokeswoman.
Officers got to the motel, found Mulkerin, who is charged with common-law robbery of a Wachovia bank, and arrested him.
But Mulkerin was staying across Bragg Boulevard at the Tropical Motel, Smith said.
Officers took Mulkerin to his room where they found money believed to have been taken in Monday’s robbery, Smith said.
There was just one problem: Some of the bank’s money was gone, Smith said.
Officers then learned that David Mims, 49, a motel maintenance worker, had a key to the room, Smith said.
Subsequently, Mims was charged with breaking into the room and taking part of the stolen cash, she said.
Mulkerin is accused of stealing $2,179 from Wachovia on Monday. Police would not say how much was taken from Mulkerin’s room.
Mulkerin is being held in the Cumberland County Jail under a $50,000 bond.
Monday’s robbery was the eighth reported in the region since Jan. 9 and was the second time in two years that Mulkerin has been charged with robbing the Wachovia at 200 Green St., police said.
He was charged in March 2005 with taking $1,098 from the bank and later pleaded guilty to common-law robbery. He was sentenced to serve between 10 months and one year in prison.
When police began watching the bank’s surveillance tape Monday, they thought Mulkerin looked familiar.
Officers made the connection between Mulkerin and the robberies.
Mulkerin also served time in prison on theft charges in Moore County and a larceny charge in Cumberland County.
He was released from prison Jan. 11, according to records at the state Department of Corrections.
