surveillance/room clearing
this probably has more application in urban setting than in the boonies, but i received this notice from the technology center of my company, so i thought i'd share. dunno if SF already has similar or better goodies....
The SRC has obtained a Eye Ball R1 for display in the Technology Petting Zoo.
The Eye Ball R1 integrates a camera, microphone, and wireless capability into a compact, ruggedized ball designed to be used in tactical and surveillance operations. SWAT teams and entry teams can roll, toss, lower, or throw the camera ball into action so they may assess the situation before they act. With the R1, the teams can determine how many suspects are present, how many hostages they may have, what kind of weapons they possess, and where the individuals are located in the room.
Users view broadcast video and audio from the R1 on a Personal Display Unit (PDU), which features a 6.4” color screen. Through the PDU, the user can toggle between two R1s, view their video output, and control each ball’s movement. The camera can be rotated 360° at 4 RPM to analyze the area, taking in a 55° horizontal and 41° vertical field of view. The R1 can capture video from up to 25 yards away, audio from up to 5 yards away, and can transmit the video up to 200 yards. The ball transmits the audio and video in the 2.4GHz frequency range; the control signals are sent in the 902 – 928MHz frequency range. The R1 is battery powered with an operating time of 2 hours. The PDU’s battery allows for 3 hours of operation.
The system can be deployed in several different ways. The R1 can be attached to a lowering wire, allowing teams to clear stairwells. The device can also be attached to a pole or spike so that the user can investigate ceilings and attics. With a near infrared illumination capability of up to 9 yards, these dark areas quickly become visible for search and rescue teams. The system comes in a rugged deployment kit that includes two Eye Ball R1s, one PDU, one training ball, two chargers, and adapters for the lowering wire and pole/spike.
The Eye Ball R1 system is a perfect tool to see around corners, down hallways, or into rooms to ensure team safety. Search and rescue teams can use the system to search small spaces for survivors. The R1 can even be used for military surveillance operations; the Eye Ball can watch the perimeter by attaching the unit to a pole or spike, or perching it in a tree.
