Oregon National Guard

The state legislature recently passed several benefits for Oregon Guard Members. Some of my favorites are:

Fishing and Hunting Licenses are now free.

Oregon Soldiers are exempt from state personal income tax on military pay, retroactive back to 1 Jan 2001.

Temporary abscence of parent due to military service is not a change of circumstances sufficient to modify joint custody orders.

Military Death benefits are not taxable, and there are a myriad of new education benefits.

And my unit is paying to send me to Thunder Ranch next month. I love the Guard.

As liberal as your legislature is, they still have not messed with your fantastic gun laws. I suppose that will change eventually.

I had to spend the last two weeks in Ashland for some language training. That place really has become Berkeley North. It was downright depressing being around all those Berkeley/Hollywood/San Francisco transplants.

I'm sitting in a restuarant eating chow, when your typical arsty fartsy SOU alumni walk in with a couple of buddist monks. The restuarant I'm at is a place where you might find truck drivers, hunters, fishermen, and cowboys, lots of red meat on the menu.

So the waitress seats this goup of 5 they look at the menu for 5 minutes then ask, "do you have a vegetarian menu?" You coulda heard a pin drop, the waitress smiled and said, "we're not that kind of restuarant." The alumni and waif like monks promptly departed, aghast that a restuarant in Ashland doesn't have a vegan menu.

I can't believe they even allow an armory within the city limits. One thing I didn't know, but soon realized is that Ashland is the only town in Southern Oregon with a Sales Tax. You can forget about the price of real estate there too. I couldn't find any 3 bedrooms there for less than $320K.

If we could slice southern Oregon just above Roseburg, and California just above Chico, and then join them together, we'd have a fantastic state. It would be the Red Anomaly on the west coast. I did hear that state senator whats-his-name from southern Oregon talking on the radio about running for governor. I think one of his main platforms will be revision of the land use laws. I wish him luck, but he is a very red guy who will be campaigning in a very blue state.

These are indeed great. now if only all those other states would get on that band wagon and do the same thing.

I was just reading thru the Army Times...The State of california offers shit, nada, nothing!

I didn't put a "C" in california on purpose....

Guy, Not sure, Cali may have some property tax benefits for 100% P&T vets.

Oregon is pretty good to disable Vets, With less than 100% disability (can be less tha 50%) rating a Vet can get:
(1) slight reduction in Property Tx
(2) Free Hunting and Fishing license (reduced Elk tag)
(3) Free vehicle registration
(4) with Disability Tags, Free metered parking and special hunting permit

The Fed's Offer life admission to Parks and reductions in fees.

Whats bad is that california is the state with the largest amount of NG troops. I used to be in the cal Guard, but the grass was greener just across the border in Oregon, so I transferred.

California uses its guard for all sorts of things too, especially for the drug interdiction stuff. I had a few buddies on team wolf. State HQ put them on ADSW orders while they are doing the drug interdiction stuff - I think.

I love training in Camp Roberts or Ft. Hunter Liggett, but Californians just don't value their guard the way Oregon does. Its too bad that there are no 19th GRP units in Oregon. The Oregon guard really is a better organization. (not saying its perfect).

I'm a little resentful that my home state, doesn't take as good care of its soldiers as a penniless, broke state like Oregon. Especially when California's economy is supposedly the 7th largest in the WORLD.

I enjoyed my time with the Guard in Oregon [96 - 98 C 2/162 out of Eugene]. Surprisingly well funded and motivated compared to Louisiana.
