COL (ret) Tim Whalen
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In the early morning hours of October 20, 2026, Timothy Luigi Whalen made his final jump, this time into the great unknown. He died in his favorite chair, with it's view of Pikes Peak in the distance.
Tim was born in Albany, N.Y., on February 11, 1954 to Thomas A. and Miriam C. (Clark) Whalen. He grew up in Boght Corners at the end of a dead end street, high on a hill surrounded by woods. He attended St. Marie's Parochial School in Cohoes, N.Y., and was a 1972 graduate of Shaker High. At Siena College he joined the ROTC, and went on to have a very successful career in the U.S. Army.
That career included being an Airborne Ranger with the 82nd Airborne, seeing action in Somalia, and serving in the Pentagon as a member of the joint chiefs of staff. When 9/11 occurred, he was in the process of retiring, and asked to stay, and was sent to Afghanistan with a covert special forces group. Tim was a highly decorated Green Beret, including earning a bronze star. He retired as a Colonel in 2003.
While commanding the 2nd battalion of the 10th special forces group (A) at Fort Carson, Tim fell in love with the Rocky Mountains, and settled permanently in Colorado Springs.
He was an avid bicyclist and skier, sometimes even skiing up the hills (skinning). From a young age he was a voracious reader, and also enjoyed writing poetry.
Tim is survived by his daughter, Jodie Hook; her husband, Kevin; and their children Madeline, Cameron, Jacob, Elizabeth and Samuel. Also, by his siblings, Johanna M. Whalen, John A. Whalen, Jennifer M.C. Whalen and Rachel Whalen; and his niece, Amelia M. Whalen; and multiple cousins.
Tim will be remembered for his bravery and determination, kindness, loving and playful spirit, and unending generosity. He will be interred at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
