Sequestration produces hollow military
As I understand it, the CONGRESS refused to pass a targeted spending bills. They set up a dead man's switch with a drop date certain which required a given % of every government department. Every agency could allocate their given cuts,i.e. DOD cut allocate 50% of Army cuts; 25% of Navy cuts; 20% of AF; the remaining 5% assorted smaller department. the actual percentages are for demonstration only.
The president is unable to Executive Order out of the jam that congress created by their own inaction. This sequestration is supposed to last a finite number of years. In the meantime, the AF is buying $400 M/air with plane production runs of 1-200. This is what is hollowing the Army personnel issues, including pay and benefits. But proportionally the AF is getting the least cutting, with the Army stuck with BOHICA.
I guess the point in this exercise in self flagellation is, why doesn't ALL military related organizations get on a public campaign to do a public SHAMING of congress to do their constitutionally mandated budgetary responsibility? They already have an approval or respect of a used car dealer/journalist.
We have served, continue to serve, and will serve in the future. As a soldier politics is off limits. But we who have a vested interest more than some, need to make post service political infrastructure. We have/had situations that required a leadership function filling a vacuum. If enough of us used our leadership in the arena, it's possible to make governing a trade of honor. I think you can take an SF LTC and have a functional representative from day one. A COL could probably be a functional senator, with a little spool up time, but not much.
I have not been impressed with currently sitting congressmen/women. Does this make any sense, or do I need to take more Haldol?
