Angry FB and identity theft...it happened to me...

Facebook almost cost me my marriage this morning.

All "security" protocols were in place. Everything was "safeguarded" as much as allowed on the site.

A woman in North Carolina sent a message to my wife, my wife's friend, my daughter, and my mother-in-law that this woman and I had been in an online relationship for more than a year. When I asked her for money and she refused, and I subsequently refused to meet her in person, she got angry for being strung along and decided to "expose me" to my wife, friends and family.

THANKFULLY, I was able to find and message the woman, and she was kind enough to call and speak with my wife. There is still a person using my identity, all my photos, information about my life pretending to be me on at least one dating website, "delightful dot com"

My home is on the mend, a tough thing for newlyweds who have both been cheated on in the past to go through so early in our marriage....but on the mend none the less.

Be forewarned on Facebook - my account is on it's countdown timer for deletion.

At least half my criminal defense clients had the drama start on FB. It is the root of all evil.

Glad you are sharing that story....maybe some can wise up about using that site.
Good how it worked out though and sorry you had to go thru that crap.....that has to be a real gut sinking feeling with some asshole using your identity.

Glad everything is straightened out. Facebook should post the names of the lowlifes who do things like this.

Any possibility of an ex-wife pulling this?

We considered this-closely.
After reading some of the e-mail forwarded from the young lady who was duped...it is doubtful. Not to mention that the back and forth went on for more than a YEAR. An awful lot of effort on her part to extort money based on being an SF Guy stuck in Afghanistan who needs money for his dying 16 yr old sister to have surgery.

Stranger things have happened I guess...but the woman was very nice when I contacted her and asked her to call my wife so they could talk. And very forthcoming with some truly personal email correspondence that she and "I" had.

Either way- glad it's over.
Just putting it out there for others...

Facebook doesn't care about stuff like that. All they care about is advertising dollars. The more people who are on the site, and the more "marketable" information they can collect about their users, the more money they make.

There are a couple of (closed) groups that I admin, and spammers are always sending "join" requests to get in and post their spam. The accounts are always fake, and pretty obvious, so I took to reporting them to Facebook as such. After a while, Facebook quit taking my reports, apparently under the belief that I was filing frivolous reports because there were so many (often several per day).

You are correct. She got my real wife's info from HERs and my REAL FB. Go figure.

We have seen this before... But this one sounds closer to a Nigerian scam.

We've just gotten the hard word on Social Media accounts way down here.

We're following the Aussies' lead by directing personnel to avoid any mention/photos of military service from a bad guy targeting perspective.

But it doesn't take a trained targeting analyst to find relationship networks from all of the military related groups that abound.

Another thing I'm noticing is a decent uptick in current/prior service guys changing their Facebook names(from real to fake) and scrubbing all personal/family photos, but still "interesting" from relationship analysis. Having all the family/friends/peers they want/need I suppose and partially trying to stay off the radar to the amateurs.

I like twisted squid's approach of being less than interesting.

LinkedIn is a professional social network I don't hear much in terms of vulnerabilities to targeting…but suspect could be a more serious PERSEC threat.

I've already warned out my soldiers to tighten up for testing.

Operation Hot Young Blonde Fake Profile Thunderstorm will be conducted during our coming Winter.

Eagle,

So sorry to hear of your unfortunate situation. For myself, FB and all others are things I avoid, though the strange looks I get when telling this to folks are priceless...it's like Mars is my home planet or whatever. Lol.

Want to touch on the LinkedIn reference though, as I have had multiple "offers" to join it since turning pro in my profession...Do Not Do It! A friend of mine who lives in another state had their email and phone hacked, and someone else was in control of all that data, for a while. Scary stuff indeed.

Just my humble .02. FWIW.

Sure

Don't really want to post about active cases, but I did have one where the guy met the 21 year old (going on 13) hottie on FB. This young lady was having boatloads of fun by inviting over half the city to knock boots. When she testified at the first hearing I had to laugh at the expressions on the faces of all the coppers sitting around waiting for their cases to be called. We were ALL thinking I'da hit THAT! Now, at this point we all knew her true age was 13 but, well, I know it's not right . . . but I understand. My guy claimed he never went over there though the rest of the city did. My guy said she really pressed him to come and git it, so he thought she was a pro, and he don't PAY for it. The judge though he was being a dick for not taking the state's offer of a misdemeanor like the rest of the city did, so the judge, sua sponte, ups his bail a week before Christmas, just to git his mind raight, doncha know. I was able to get the bail back down so he was out for Christmas and we won at jury trial.

Six months later (if he had been convicted he would have still been in custody) he and a partner decide to rob an extra-legal pharmacist who was a backer of the 2nd amendment and blew his partner away. He is now sitting on felony murder. Even when I win, I lose.

Generally, the problem is people within driving distance become keyboard commandos and disrespect each other, leading to face-to-face confrontations involving brass knuckles, tasers, and real, big, M1911's.

I shouldn't bitch, it keeps me in the chips, but you will never see me on FB for any reason.
