One of our local Gun Dealers w Range had a Surefire Demo Day. (Mossberg also had a rep, but since there was no live fire - there was no one at his booth).
You could come in and test fire one of Surefires new line of suppressors for free. They had 20 rd boxes of .223 for $12.50 and two AR rifles to demo.
The provided suppressors are of a clamp on baffle only design. Both were .308, 2" in diameter, and about 6" and 8" in length. One AR was made by PMS? and was gas operated, w 10" barrel, and holographic lens. The other was piston operated, w 14" barrel, and optical sight. Both had fancy penis extension doodads afixed aplenty.
Brought the wife in as she never fired a rifle/carbine let alone a suppressor. I've never fired one of these so-called M4 carbine style rifles. Nor used a holographic or optical sight either.
My suppressor experience has only been with pistols and SMG using sub-sonic rounds. The provided .223 was not sub-sonic. I found that the suppressors easily brought the sound down to ear safe levels. Flash was reduced as well, but hard to truly evaluate. Stil, nothing like the near silence that I recalled with the High Standard pistol (.22) in single shot mode or the Sten/Stirling/MP5SDK SMGs (9mm). Even the Swedish K in .45 with that foot long can was not as loud as these were.
The baffle design is mostly maintenance free - just exterior and port cleaning. Unlike the older suppressors I was used to, with the cleaning/replacements of washers, disks, and/or packing.
All in all a great experience. Got a bit of a feel for the short rifles, some of the fancy new gadgets, open-eye shooting and new shooting positions. And hopefully the wife has a greater understanding for why suppressors are important in home defense with regards to hearing protection and target discrimination.
I could find use for a folding stock .308 with a 14-16" barrel and one of these cans. Oh yeah.
