Interesting bit at the end about humanitarian services SF has provided:

Quote:
For a period in the 1970s, the effects of Green Beret humanitarian missions were felt in the United States as well. After the Vietnam War, the Green Berets began SPARTAN (Special Proficiency At Rugged Terrain And Nation-Building). Through this operation, Green Berets traveled to impoverished rural areas of Florida and North Carolina, where they helped locals with medical care and community-building projects that included schools and hospitals.

SPARTAN (MG Emerson's program) also included areas in the Applachians and Ozarks, as well as for the BIA on reservations out West and for the NHS throughout the Southeast. The medics and engineers in particular got a lot of good training from these programs.

Wink Oh LORD have mercy on us...

If this gets out...work-load will increase to a level where, we would have to lower the standards in order to meet the demands.

Stay safe.

Interesting story. I never knew that SF were doing big projects here in our own country.

I wonder if the teams had to undergo any foreign language/cultural training before heading to Appalachia or the Ozarks.

All OJT - but PTSD counseling for culture shock upon return to the civilized world.

Sorry for the Necro-post.......

Do you know of any open source articles specifically focused on the history of SPARTAN?

I did a good search here and on Google(using the site search function) and didn't turn up much.

Probably one of the team members is a local from those areas
