Study: K-12 Admin. Employment Outpaces Student Growth

A 2011 study by the House Committee on Education & the Workforce reported that spending has tripled on K-12 education since 1970 with zero impact on student test scores.

No surprise. Even though throwing money at problems is rarely a cure, it is sad that the greatest spending increases were toward administration and not teaching programs or teachers.

It's far more complex than the article leads one to believe as schools themselves and the pedagogy of teaching have become more complex.

The article also fails to mention things like how much the support:student numbers vary from state-to-state nationally - 1:9 in Vermont to 1:23 in Idaho, e.g.

Non-teaching positions also include personnel such as librarians, teacher aides, school counselors (both ed and psych), nurses, "Master Teachers" who monitor/ train the district's teachers, tech and curricular support, etc. which schools, especially in urban districts, have added in fairly large numbers.

As far as results, that, too, is a very complex issue of discussion.

Meh.

As well intentioned as No Child Left Behind is/was NCLB has not been as successful as was hoped. Still, it was worth the try. Maybe.
