It is disturbing what the general public does not know. Every day, there are people I speak with who don't know basic things. I'm not even talking politics, I'm talking: "how many inches in a foot?", "how many states?"...
It does not surprise me at all that these people are out there. What is considered important information has been shifting over time. With the advent of the internet, it seems that it is no longer important to learn things that we all were taught in school because it can be looked up instantly.
Common knowledge is no longer common.
This is good for those of us who have learned and retained all these "unimportant" snippets of information. We get to look like freaking geniuses when we are in a discussion with people who don't have their technology handy.
Some of the best conversations I've been involved in have been with guys on my team in the field. No technology, just speaking from the heart about things we know. And if we get it wrong, there is always someone on the team who is an SME in whatever we are speaking about. Politics, art, literature, etc.
Just another illustration of why team guys should rule the world.
