Ironic that they had to meet on Saturday. Probably easier to slither out of town after the vote....

220 to 215...not what I would call an overwhelming mandate of the people. I hope some political careers are ended over this. I double checked to ensure my Representative actually voted in the manner he assured us he would. In fact I will pass along a message to him stating that I have checked the record.

To see the roll call on the vote click here to the House clerk site.

Not that this train wreck has not been in the workings for some time.

Thought I should mention the ONE so-called Republican who voted FOR the Dim bill......

The Hill, a newspaper that covers the workings of Congress, looks at the vote of U.S. Rep. Anh "Joseph'' Cao, R-New Orleans, the only Republican member of the House of Representatives to vote in favor of the Democratic health plan.

Party flip to occur shortly????

Vietnamese-born Republican stands by health bill vote

Vietnamese-born Republican stands by health bill vote

(AFP) – 13 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Vietnamese-American Anh "Joseph" Cao, the lone Republican to back a sweeping House health reform bill, defended his vote Sunday as the right move, "even if it costs me my political future."

"I made the vote to support the health care reform bill because a lot of my constituents are uninsured, a lot of them are poor and it was the right decision for the people of my district," said Cao, following the historic vote to approve a one-trillion dollar health care reform program.

"I had to make a decision and I felt that last night's decision was the right decision for my district, even though it was not the popular decision for my party," Cao, 42, told CNN television on Sunday.

"I've always been focusing on making the right decisions for the people of my district, whether or not it will cost me my political future," he said.

He was speaking after the House of Representatives narrowly handed President Barack Obama a major legislative victory on his key domestic priority.

The bill, approved by a vote of 220-215, would extend health coverage to some 36 million Americans who lack it now. But a similar version now faces a battle to pass the US Senate.

Born in Saigon, Cao -- the first native of Vietnam to serve in Congress -- Cao came to the United States as an eight-year old refugee, with members of his family.

The political newcomer, trained as an immigration attorney, was elected in a special election in December to his mostly poor, mostly black district in New Orleans, where two-thirds of the registered voters are Democrats.

His seat was previously held by William Jefferson, who was ousted by voters following a bribery scandal.

Cao Votes for “Life”; Achieves Legislation to Protect the Health of All Americans

Washington, DC , Nov 7 -

Tonight, Congressman Anh “Joseph” Cao (LA-2) voted in favor of the comprehensive health reform bill, H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act.

Of his vote, Cao said: “Tonight, I voted to keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortion and to deliver access to affordable health care to the people of Louisiana.

Cao said: “I read the versions of the House [health reform] bill. I listened to the countless stories of Orleans and Jefferson Parish citizens whose health care costs are exploding – if they are able to obtain health care at all. Louisianans needs real options for primary care, for mental health care, and for expanded health care for seniors and children."

The bill passed the House at a 220-215 vote.

Cao said: “Today, I obtained a commitment from President Obama that he and I will work together to address the critical health care issues of Louisiana including the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness, as well as issues related to Charity and Methodist Hospitals. And, I call on my constituents to support me as I work with him on these issues."

Cao said: “I have always said that I would put aside partisan wrangling to do the business of the people. My vote tonight was based on my priority of doing what is best for my constituents."

H.R. 3962 included the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, which will keep in place current federal law on abortion funding and conscience protections for health care providers.

Cao said: “Before the Stupak-Pitts amendment was adopted as part of this health reform bill, the bill failed to explicitly include the longstanding policy prohibiting federal funding of elective abortion and plans which include elective abortion.”

According to a letter from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops dated November 7, 2009, “The [Stupak-Pitts] Amendment will not affect coverage of abortion in nonsubsidized health plans, and will not bar anyone from purchasing a supplemental abortion policy with their own funds.”

Cao said: “Thank to the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, taxpayer dollars will not go to supporting elective abortions, and for thousands of my constituents, this was a top priority. By incorporating this amendment into the health reform bill, my colleagues and I made this bill better, and that is an achievement of which I will always be proud.”

Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond, the archbishop of New Orleans, said: “I am grateful to Congressman Cao for his courage and determination to defend life. I appreciate his work to prevent abortion from being included in health care reform and for protecting conscience rights of health care professionals. I – and, I am sure, many in New Orleans would join me – [I] appreciate Congressman Cao's commitment to the people of New Orleans."
How the leadership and rank and file of the GOP respond to Mr. Cao's vote and reasons for it, will send a clear message to moderate Republicans and self described independents.

Few if any of them give a good damn about anything but increasing their personal power and wealth.

The show we see is all a bunch of Carnival flim-flam.

It's all about the "next" term in office isn't it.

Unfortunately the voters of America have the memory of a chicken.

Pro Choice Dems May not Back Final Version Of Bill

So they voted for it, but said they will not vote for it coming out of conference if abortions aren't paid for. This healthcare bill is never going to get through, and the dems have no one to blame but themselves. Gee lets penalize the 85% of americans that do have health care, for those 15% that don't. If we are going to pay for elective surgeries such as abortions, why not pony up for breast implants, and face lifts, and tummy tucks.

Some 41 pro-choice House Democrats have signed on to a letter headed to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk that states their intention to vote against a conference committee report if the Stupak-Pitts anti-abortion amendment remains as is, according to a draft of the letter obtained by Greg Sargent.

The amendment, which the House passed by a 240-to-196 vote on Saturday, calmed some conservative anti-abortion Democrats who worried federal funding would be provided for abortions in the Democratic health-care bill that passed late Saturday night.

The letter:

As Members of Congress we believe that women should have access to a full range of reproductive health care. Health care reform must not be misused as an opportunity to restrict women’s access to reproductive health services.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment to H.R. 3962, The Affordable Healthcare for America Act, represents an unprecedented and unacceptable restriction on women’s ability to access the full range of reproductive health services to which they are lawfully entitled. We will not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts women’s right to choose any further than current law.

Many pro-choice Democrats, including Pelosi, made their opposition to the amendment clear during debate on Saturday. But they voted to pass the bill so the process could move along to the Senate, vowing to strip the amendment from any final legislation.

"There's going to be a firestorm here," Rep. Diana DeGette, a pro-choice Colorado Democrat, said. "We're not going to let this into law."

As a working copy of the letter is circulated around to more pro-choice House Democrats today, it’s worth noting that if the 41 Democrats who are said to have already signed on follow through with Nay votes, it’s enough to kill the bill.

Slightly off topic but health care related

Gentlemen, if you haven't seen this before. Received from a trusted
source. This is primarily for military retirees. If you have any in
your address list please forward.

Subject: PASS THIS TO ALL MILITARY RETIREES

This is true. It is on pages 77, 172, 218, and 434. You have to dig to see
the charges. We (retirees) would lose the Medicare for life benefit and
would have to pay. We would lose TRICARE as a total care package. We would
not be allowed to keep TRICARE so when Obama stands and says if you like
what you have you can keep it, He lies.

This is a "Heads Up" on a battle we are facing nowand down the road with
the new Administration. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has already
drafted proposed legislation that would basically reduce our TRICARE for
Life benefits to a system whereby we pay deductibles and co-pays up to
$6,301 the first year for you and your spouse, with future years being
indexed to increase with inflation.

What canwe do? The article below, obtained from an Air Force Association
and written by BG Bob Clements, best describes what we can do. Please read
it and check the links for CBO language and do what Bob says-Send this
emailto every Military Retiree you know and write and email your
Congressman often. For those of you that might have voted for "Change",
you should doit more than often!

TRICARE FOR LIFE'S FUTURE....

TRICARE For Life was instituted to correct the broken promise that
military retirees would receive free healthcare coverage for life and it
covers the Medicare co-pay. Now a heavy assault has begun on
Veterans'/Retirees' benefits to pay for other programs our President
promised during the campaign. And it is a high priority of his
administration. The one item of most interest to Retired Military is in
Article 189. If approved by Congress the first assault wave would hit in
2011 and would hit hard. It would initiate cost sharing to require
retirees to pay the first $525 of medical cost and 50% of the next $4,725
for a first year cost of $2,888 per person. Itwould be indexed to increase
with inflation. A reason given for this action
(for PR effect) is "overuse" by Retirees.

For those of you who are covered by TFL you will want to pay attention
(Below) to what BG Bob Clements has surfaced about the future of TFL. In
any case, on page 189 of the Congressional Budget Office report, see the
note below on how toget to that spot, there is a strong recommendation to
eventually eliminate the program as it is too expensive. Just another move
to slight those of us who dedicated much of our adult lives to the defense
of our country.

Strongly recommend that you contact your elected officials and register
your strong opposition to the elimination of the TFL program. Heads-up
from BG Bob Clements, USAF Ret The following has been added to the
Congressional Budget Office

Web Site www.cbo.gov/ a. Budget, Options, Volume 1: Health Care
(www.cbo.gov/doc.cfm?index=3D9925
) For those who have never opened one of these web sites from OMB :

1. double click on the above URL

2. click on PDF

3. click on the binoculars

4. do a search for TFL

Now here it is folks and I will guarantee if you sit around on your behind
and do nothing about it as they bring these options forward this coming
year, you will lose one of the best healthcare benefits that the Medicare
eligible retired military have. It is short f the promises made that we
fought so hard for back in the late 90s and early 2000s but it is still
the best healthcare program that anyone in the United States has, bar
none.

People who are professionals always look for the channel of least
resistance when it comes to cutting money out of the Federal and DOD
budget. I can tell you this straight on, military retirees are one of
those channels of least resistance noted for sitting around, doing
nothing, and waiting for ole Joe to do it for them. You had better wake
up. Your medical benefits are prime target. If you lose them, you have
nobody to blame but yourself. Let me repeat that ... you have nobody to
blame but yourself.

The way to secure your benefits is to write to your members of Congress
and to keep writing and writing and writing. ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH!! Keep
repeating the above statement until you are blue in the face.

Now I'm going to make one morestatement to all of you younger people out
there who are not yet eligible for TRICARE for Life.

HEALTH CARE WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME THE DOMINATING FACTOR IN YOUR LIFE.

Remember that . . . . it will impact you big time with the utmost in
cruelty unless you are fortunate enough to die from a heart attack or get
run over by a truck.

The service organizations will put up a fight, but, they will need your
help and can't do it by themselves. I hope this makes it clear as to what
you can expect if you do nothing.

To show you how stupid these professionals can be at times just read the
data on the noted sites closely. You will see that in spite of the MTFs
(Military Treatment Facility) need to get patients back to keep their
doctors busy and the hospitals from going to clinic status, these people
from OMB would employ a means to keep retirees from using MTF facilities
by charging them a fee for services. How dumb can you get. Even if you are
an Obama fan, and believe that changeth cometh, FL option from OMB will
not go away. They need the money they spend on you for other programs for
people who produce nothing but votes to keep their boss in office. If you
know of anyone who is Retired Military, please forward this on to them.
