DUMB and DUMBER Part I

A Fort Benning soldier was convicted Aug. 17 at a special court-martial for shooting a fellow basic trainee.

Pvt. William M. Hudgins of D Company, 1st Battalion, 330th Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade, was sentenced by a military judge to 10 months confinement and a bad-conduct discharge for agreeing to shoot a soldier in the leg.

The incident occurred May 11 on a small arms range on Main Post.

Post spokeswoman Brenda Donnell said the injured basic trainee, whose name wasn’t released, asked Hudgins to shoot him so he would no longer have to serve.

Even though his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening in May, the soldier remains in the hospital recuperating, Donnell said.

Donnell could not say whether the injured soldier will face a judge upon discharge from the medical facility because that portion of the case is under investigation by the post’s Criminal Investigation Division.
