The comments on that article make me realize that their are a majority of people that want to run the country into the ground.
My Fav, " people need to realize if the government needs more money, they should just print it. That way they can afford the social programs. I mean the government is the only one who controls the dollar." -paraphrased but accurate.
Damn.

They lost their sugar daddy U.S. Senator Robert Byrd back in 2010 he was once referred to as the "King of Pork." If you doubt that just drive to WV and see all the things named after him. Maybe this is just the beginning of the blue to red revolution.

When I was a freshman in high school, there was a class (civics maybe) where we were taught to read the financial pages (stock quotes, commodity prices, etc.) and set up mock accounts. Do you think that they teach that in HS anymore? Or basic (free market) economics even?

Were we in the same class? As to what they teach now, I have no clue. Come to think of it, I don't think my kids had to do that. Maybe that's why they thought Dad just went to the ATM to get money.
Damn, could the core curriculum really be that out of touch?
Time for the bat signal - Richard, calling Richard, need some help here.

I hate to rain on this parade, but this is one of the few blue states moving to red.
Most are going the other way, and as we have an increasing population on the public dole and illegal aliens are increasingly permitted voting rights, it is only going to get worse.

They do just print it.
That is how they afford the social programs.
The Fed prints dollars (federal reserve notes).
The Treasury issues debt.
Fed buys Treasury debt with printed dollars.
Treasury now has printed dollars.
Treasury uses some of those printed dollars to pay interest to Fed, spends the rest.
Most of that interest becomes Fed "profit".
Fed "profit" is remitted back to Treasury.
Treasury pays "interest" to itself, via Fed "profit".
New debt is issued to pay old debt (debt not repaid).
Eventually, Treasury needs yet more money (spending desires exceed revenues gained from taxes + public desire to buy Treasury debt).
So, the process is repeated.
In practical effect, the laundering of federal reserve notes isn't much different than the issuance of US notes.
(Printing money).

Granted it is not much of a parade but it is a start.

We set up the mock accounts in 7th or 8th grade civics or social studies class - IIRC I made a mock killing on Coca Cola Bottling. Good learning experience. Each student had a chart on the wall for the semester and we tracked/graphed the stock price movement for all to see.

The idea ties several different story lines together. The increasing rift politically, the division geographically (urban versus rural) etc...etc... articles on how the nation is at 1861-like levels of division.
Add to that the contributing factor of "career political parasites" that pander to the population/voter base in order to continue to live off the backs of the middle class.
The nation is rudderless.
