The Consulate General of the United States in Jerusalem

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archive.../07/024163.php

The state department's wishful thinking about Jerusalem

July 30, 2009
A friend called to my attention the home page of the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem, which is devoid of any material pertaining to Jews or Israelis. Every item visible on the page is about Palestinians.
A fair reflection, I think, of where this administration's sympathies lie and how it sees Jerusalem.

[See for yourself, though I expect this web page will cange very soon…]

Elections have consequences.

Large and growing chasm separates leftist US Jews from leftist Israelis

Try reading beyond the headlines - not all of which are about Palestinians or Palestinian issues.

Having worked at an Embassy - the web-site is a rotating reflection of recent and on-going issues of concern to the CG and staff - it changes with the relative importance of the issues and the message we're trying to project. Based on my experiences, I would say that this web-site currently reflects an attempt by the USIS to deflect some of the criticism of the USA solely having an overtly pro-Israeli bias by publicly hi-lighting some of the programs being undertaken to educate Palestinians. Smart PR in the midst of the Muslim world - especially in a cultural-crossroads of a historically important city like Jerusalem.

That web site is for the counslate in Jerusalem, not the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv.

The embasy is the official U.S. presence in the nation of Israel, the consulate is there solely for the P.A., Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

Correct - consulates exist as regionally specific sub-HQs and the CG is normally a DOS career Foreign Service Officer vice a political appointee.

For example, prior to German unification and the AmEmbassy's move to Berlin, the AmEmbassy-Bonn (with politically appointed Ambassador Vernon Walters) had consulates headed by FSO Consuls General in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Hannover, Hamburg, and Berlin. Now the Embassy is in Berlin and the consulates are in Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Munich.

Just as a point of interest and comparison - the US has 11 consulates in Canada, 12 in Mexico, and 13 in China.
