Col. Walter "Scotty" White Jr. passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Scott White and Mildred Jumel White. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ladye White; two sons and three daughters-in law, W. Scott and Dawn White, John and Angie White, and Cheryl White; sister, Marlyn Monette and husband Edwin Monette; four grandchildren, Erik and Joel White, Elizabeth and Zachary White; great-granddaughter, Eryka White; and two nieces and a nephew, Debbie Fralix, Donna Duplichan and Dan Daniel. Scotty received his bachelor's and master's degrees from LSU and was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1960. He was Company Commander, Training Company A, at Fort Gordon, Ga., graduated from microwave school and was commissioned as a regular Army officer in 1961. He was parachute and Ranger qualified over the next year. He commanded the 362nd Signal Troop Company in Vietnam and served in Company Command Headquarters. After completing the signal career course in 1963, he was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group, Airborne, Fort Bragg, N.C., and commanded a Special Forces team in the Dominican Republic. That was followed by a second tour in Vietnam as a member of the 5th Special Forces Group, adviser to a Viet Ranger Group. In 1967, he was assigned to 8th Special Forces Group, Panama, and was a member of the team that captured Che Guevara in Bolivia. After completing the Command and General Staff College in 1969, he was assigned as a Commander of a Joint Communications Unit of NATO in Naples, Italy. From 1975-79, Col. White served as Troop Commander at Fort Richie, Md., then commanded the Joint Communication Support Element at MacDill Air Force Base. He was one of the commanders whose unit supported the raid into Iran to free the embassy hostages. In 1981, he was assigned as Operations Officer for communications in Korea. Col. White's awards include three Legions of Merit, two Crosses of Gallantry Vietnamese, three Air Medals, two Bronze Star Medals, three Meritorious Service Medals, three Presidential Unit Citations, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutists Badge and Jungle Expert Badge. After his retirement from active duty in 1983, Col. White joined Electronic Data Systems, serving as senior manager for voice and data operations for General Motors throughout the United States and Europe. Col. White was a lifetime member of the Cadets of the Ole War Skule, Baton Rouge High Alumni Association Hall of Honor, Military Order of the World Wars and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 7856 and the 4th degree of Antoine Blanc Assembly 2047. SK White was an Exemplar for the 4th degree for the state of Louisiana. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 21, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Francisville, at 11 a.m. followed by interment in Roselawn Cemetery, Baton Rouge. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the beginning of Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Building Fund, P.O.
