Girls and Guns

I took my girls up to McKellers Rod & Gun Club Range today. They had a great time blasting out the center of their targets with a Marlin 25N in .22 Cal. They went through 100 rds.

They told me they had almost as much fun looking at the young guys two tables down as they did shooting. Oh, Girls, at least it was almost.

Since I heard one of the guys talking about Phase II and there was about 8 of them they may have been in the pipe line somewhere.

After the .22 the girls moved up to the AR15 and liked firing semi auto at a OBL target. After about 50 rounds each it was time to call it a day. On the way home they were asking when they get to go again.

They've saved their targets and are going to show them to all their friends .

Pete, I don't know how old your girls are, but I imagine you are going to scare the living daylights out of their suitors.

I'll have to stock up on fun stuff for them to shoot at. I like the powder ballon idea. Since they like the .22 they may like the spinning metal targets also.

The shoot-and-see targets sound nice but their shot groups are so tight that after three shots it would just be a green spot. At 25 meters with a .22 and 4x scope their shot groups were about 2 inches. Not bad for their first time out.

I told them the next time we go to the range it will have to be during the week so we can go over to the Green Beret Club for lunch, beer and a little pool. We do lunch, I drink a few long neck buds while they drink cokes and play pool. Maybe they'll see a few more young lads.

Since they drive I have auto DDs.

Charcoal briquettes make good reactive targets too if they are allowed on your range

Just buy a box of skeet, and shoot them.

Most of what you shoot at McKellars has to be cleaned up though.

Teaching anyone to have fun shooting is a real joy these days.

I taught my daughter how to shoot and she saved the 3X5 card on which I had drawn her desired point of impact. Her shot group from 25 feet with the .22 pistol I had her use could be covered by a quarter. She keeps it on her refrigerator door I think as a casual reminder for her boy friends that their errors in judgement could result in painful castration

When I was 12 years old, two LEO's in our community volunteered to take the young ladies in our youth group out shooting. It was the first time any of us had even handled a gun. After a class on safety, they let us fire quite a few different different guns and rifles. WE HAD A BLAST! I loved it so much that one of them took me out several more times with my brothers. The boys scouts in our area did this all the time, but that was the only time any girls group I belonged to had done it. I think that exposure to fire arms at a young age is very important and makes a lasting impact, particularly on young ladies. I would highly recommend anyone who has the ability to do this kind of volunteer work/teaching find the time to do it. It can change a young girl's life.

Ten years ago, when the Boy Scouts were beginning their new co-ed, Venturing program, I had occasion to be the Crew Advisor for 7 girls and 6 boys. We spent a long weekend at Hunter Liggitt Army Base doing all sorts of training.

On our way to the handgun range, I was driving my Suburban with all 7 girls in it. The girls were finishing their cereal when I passed a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. All of a sudden Liz yelled for me to stop the car. I applied the brakes and all 7 girls got out and walked to the rabbit. They were joined by 5 boys and they placed a box of TRIX cereal next to the rabbit. They spent the next ten minutes photographing themselves, the rabbit and the TRIX package. The photographs were prominent on the display board that highlighted our weekend activities. The caption on the photos was "TRIX are for kids, not for dead rabbits".

Both of my children started early. I had to help them hold the rifle and squeeze the trigger. They do not have that childish curiosity about firearms and are completely at home with them.

In middle school my daughter has taken great pride in knowing that she knew more about firearms than her male contemporaries. She started helping in reloading at 9. Both her and her brother has AK's, hunting rifles and both attended the Oregon Hunter's Safety course.

The have also fired belt fed weapons.

Things are changing a little bit now, she just turned 14. For her 9th birthday she wanted camo, a hunting knife and more ammo.

She was also a Kenpo tournament boxer (several medals).

BTW she was never a "Tom boy".

We're Lucky men Pete, My daughters both like to shoot and my oldest who just turned 21 asked for a special gift for her 21st B-day... A Glock 26 9mm. She began shooting around 14. Both my daughter are better than me with a handgun. Though they don't hunt I got my son for that. But it is so cool to involve everyone in the tradition of shooting.

Girls & Guns

I started my children young also. My daughter is now 28 and son is 24. Started both with a BB rifle at five or so. Moved on to .22 pistol and rifle a few years later. Both were shooting my 1911 and highpowered rifles by the time they were 12 or 13.
When my daughter started dating many dates were on the range or deer hunting. Never had any problems with the local boys. I always told them that I didn't worry about my daughter because if they got out of the way, my daughter would shoot their eyes out.
My daughter started dating a city boy in college. The first time I saw him I was cleaning several pistols in hope to shoot some with my daughter and her new friend. He stood in my home and told me he had never even held a gun. He told me that there would never be a gun in his home!
Before I new it he and I stood nose to nose. I told him my daughter would never date a fag like him and I would stomp a mud hole in his a**.
Well guess what, she married him.
They now have me two wonderful grandchildren. They also have several guns in the house. It took me a few years to get him on the range but he is pretty darn good now.
My son has always been a fine shot and shoots regularly with me.
Start them young and teach them right.
