Working in education gets "interestinger and interestinger" all the time. As the years roll by, the number of my fellow faculty members with military experience shrinks and shrinks. With a large "buy-out" two years ago, we lost most of the ex-mil types on my campus. Not counting the two JROTC instructors, there are now three (out of 125) among the certified faculty and admin. 2 Army and 1 USMC, and two of us will be gone within 3 years. Most of our faculty have no concept of what the military is really about - and are filled with buckets full of untruths and imaginings - probably gleaned during their HS and college days.
We have many who "lobby" to get recruiters "banned" from campus. Fortunately, we are a "vocational magnet" school - and the way the rules are written now by the Feds, a military placement counts as a "job match" pretty much across the board. So the "powers that be" will not disallow recruiters.
However, these "patriotic" Americans who are so concerned with the horrors that the young people they love so much might be exposed to by serving in a military which they know nothing about had NO problems showing up at a luncheon provided by the US Army recruiter who was leaving his assignment and wanted to thank the school for all the support he had received. They ate the chicken and cole slaw with gusto, then went back to their bashing.
