Wine

Although I have great hesitation on starting a thread about wine, I feel that it would be of some interest to the membership if would could compile a library of standard, affordable and most importantly, available wines that would suit a variety of menu choices.

It has been my impression over the years that familiarity with just a few dependable producers can make all the difference when dinning out, in that they consistently produce wines that are not only approachable, but adaptable to different menu selections.

In that regard, I think we should limit the collection to wines that are under $60 per/blt.

Also, to keep it within the scope of what is available outside of major cities.

An example would be Heitz Vineyard. They are a rock solid producer and purchase, and one does not have to go to their extreme end for a great bottle. Also, their Chardonnay is as consistent as is their Cab NV; retail about $25-30.

In posting a response, should you be interested, I would like to establish this format:
Wine: Producer, Varietals, Price. No ratings as they can be very subjective.
Red: Heitz, Cab Sav , $27

When the thread burns itself out, I’ll group the various selections and consolidate the posts, deleting all the submissions and closing the thread. In the end; leaving a list that we can comfortably use which will expand our knowledge and confidence when ordering.

Along with that is the theory that the best wines are the most expensive or the ones with the most media hype. That's why I go for wines from the small guys. Most of the time you actually get to meet the mind behind the wine when you hit their tasting rooms - hearing about the wine from that side greatly enhances my sipping pleasure.
