Iraqi Arabic Dictionary?

Since you are some of the Army's finest in terms of language-trained individuals, I figured you'd know this one:

My husband is currently on a MiTT and is determined to learn as much Iraqi Arabic as possible. Prior to departure he'd purchased some Arabic dictionaries, but the translators and Iraqi soldiers he works with have been very quick to tell him that Iraqi Arabic and Arabic are not the same thing. He's asked them to edit his books, and they've started that process, but he'd like to try and find some materials written for Iraqi Arabic. I found some things on Amazon that look pretty good, but he didn't like what I told him about the dictionary that I found - namely that it is romanized, not in Arabic script. Does anyone know of an Iraqi Arabic dictionary that has Arabic script? Ideally he'd like to be able to fit it in his ACU pockets and carry it around with him, but at this point - he'll take anything.

He speaks Japanese, and one of the things he loves for his Japanese study is this little computer thing that does on-the-fly translation: http://store.aikotradingstore.com/necawog70p.html
Has anyone ever seen anything like this for Iraqi Arabic or even Arabic in general? I am looking for something of known value since they are kinda spendy. I know there are some out there, but they aren't brands I know. I also know there are some good online programs that I've seen discussed on here, but his internet access is crap.

Thanks!!!

Resources

Hello Shar,

Not sure if this helps but there is a program in Washington State that has online courses in the 4 main Arabic dialects.

www.dalilusa.com

Not sure if it requires a strong MSA base or not.

Hope this helps.

Another thought is the Armenian that runs this program, Walid, is very passionate and helpful, give him a call and discuss your desired out comes and I imagine he can point you in the right direction.

Also, one of the better Arabic 'Bookstores' is in LA and probably carries something like your looking for.

I just need to track down its contact details again.

If you want I can post this for you later.

Not sure if you have seen this one on Amazon:

Modern Military Dictionary: English-Arabic/Arabic-English
http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Militar...d_bxgy_e_img_b

The words are alphabetized in English in the first column with the Arabic translation in the second column, in Arabic script.

Some other resources that can be run on a computer can be found here:

A third computer based option is Tactical Iraqi which your husband should be able to download for free since he is active duty. I don't have any experience with this program but I'm sure someone else here does and can comment on it.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the books they are working on to make it more Iraqi dialect/regional friendly - but I'll double check with him.

I'll pass the other two resources on to him, but his internet access is really check email on AKO only and I'm not thinking that's changing any time soon. Maybe I can download it and send it to him. I'll have to check into that.
