Try, completely unknown. His would be treated as the joke candidacy it is but for the fact that liberal media will hype him and gloss over his negatives since he's apparently positioning himself as the antiwar candidate.
Gravel was upset in the Democratic primary in 1980 by someone even more unknown, Clark S. Gruening, who then proceeded to lose to Frank Murkowski in the 1980 general election. The loss of the seat by the Democrats was part of the party losing control of the Senate from 1980 to 1986. Alaska has not sent a Democrat to Washington since Gravel left in 1980.
