AR Option
Just curious what you guys think about the CMMG MK47. Been looking for an AR chambered in 7.62x39 and ran across these in my searches. I like the fact that they used a modified AR10 bolt rather than a modified 5.56 bolt. It does take AK mags but this does cause some changes of features. There is no last shot hold open or bolt release features and the mag release mimics the AK. So it is basically an exchange of having a heavier, more durable bolt but at the loss of a few AR features. Figured I would ask the pros on this before spending the money on one. Below is the short barrel version that I am looking at. Thanks

Not a fan of the 7.62x39 in an AR frame,,
#1 fail,, the 7.62x39 is the ballistic equivalent to the 120 yr old 30.30 Winchester.
#2, why bother with a bastardization of the AR,, when you can purchase a weapon designed specifically for the 7.62x39,, any AK variant will function better and COST less.

Yeah, I agree its an old topic. I have an AK and it is decent, my issue is weight and feel. I like the AR platform more. Mainly would be used for hogs all within 100 meters. I would really like to shed a bit of carried weight when doing so and an AR in 7.62 could possibly do that.

For hogs and an AR, use the speer 70 gr spitzer softpoint. It chambers reliably and will drop a hog instantly.
I don't know if that bullet is available commercially loaded, I reload mine with that bullet and it is VERY effective.
I also agree with JJ_BPK, the AR works well with the round it's designed for, messing around with something else like this just engenders mistrust for myself.

Not sure there is much of a difference, unless you talking AK's with milled receivers?.
The current M4, as issued runs around 7.5 LBS.
The Rusky AK-74M, as issued runs around 7.5 LBS
My Hunky AMD-65 is almost 8 LBS

Why are you not considering the 300 AAC Black Out from your AR platform? Pushes a .308 165 grn bullet at 1600 fps from a 10.5 inch barrel? If you wanted to use a can your looking at 220 grn bullets sprinting at 1050 fps. To me this is a great set up for hogs, unless they are running body armor?

Thanks guys. The weight of this MK47 is about 6.5 lbs. Not a big difference but it's a bit and the idea is that not only will it be a bit lighter but also somewhat more accurate than an AK platform. As far as the 300 blackout, I have only steered towards 7.62x39 for ammo availability and price points. When looking at stocking ammo for just whatever, AK rounds are a bit easier on the wallet. I was just exploring a more accurate, lighter package with durability combined with the ease of ammo storage.

If you are hunting to fill the larder, buy the gun that you need. The savings in protein purchases will pay for it. If you want trophy heads and an impressive gun case, buy the gun that will impress your friends.
