French military shoot 16 during exercise

Pretty bad. Not to make light of it, but you would think they would have noticed after the first casualty.

Four of the wounded were in serious condition, including a 3-year-old child, Bernard Lemaire, chief of the regional administration in Aude, said on France-3 television. Fifteen of the injured were civilians.
I am all about realistic training, but I am also all about safety. Who screwed up and didn't check the weapons and ammo directly prior to the assault?? And why in the HE-double hockey sticks was there a 3 year old child present??
Is it always necessary to push the envelope to prove what bad a--es we are??

Why was someone with a weapon covering a three year old, blank or live?
Bad habits to get into.

If this was a mistake as it seems it was, just imagine how that individual who did the shooting must feel. However I'm curious as to what type of weapon was used and how that many were wounded before he noticed that it was live ammo.

I realize that some of these folks may have been in real combat situations. Is it easy for that to get confused?? Screams and blood are real............

You would think that loading the mag into the weapon, live ammo would have been spotted. Stranger things have happened!
Several years ago during a Civil War re-enactment at Getteysberg an actor died from a neck wound. The round was a minnie ball from a muzzle loader ( if I recall the story correctly). You would think that loading the minnie ball would have been noticed by the shooter!

We lost an SF Captain in Paraguay when his Junior Commo guy loaded a live mag from his FP ammo during a contact drill and shot him at more than 75 meters.
He fire two rounds, the first blew off the BFA, as designed, the next one hit the Team Leader on the left side and transversed his torso, shredding his heart and liver.
People who think the 5.56 will not create significant wounds are making a mistake.
There was only one guy who loaded live ammo though, and he only fired two rounds at one target.

I think there is a back story here,,,
Military weapons need a BFA to opperate with blanks,, and I thought a weapon with a BFA would semi-self-destruct with live ammo..
If it's designed to blow off on the 1st round,, it's not doing the job??
and as short as the FAMAS is, the BFA should stick out like a sore thumb???

Negative.
The BFA is designed to self-destruct and not injure the firer.
There is no safety offered for people downrange if the shooter keeps firing.

My thoughts exactly. I guess that firearm safety rule "never point your muzzle at anything you do not wish to destroy" didn't go threw their mind.

French army chief resigns after army incident
Reuters -
French army chief of staff General Bruno Cuche resigned on Tuesday after a soldier fired live ammunition instead of blanks at a weekend military show and injured 17 people, the presidential office said.
President Nicolas Sarkozy had pledged to react rapidly and severely and to seek explanations from the army.
"The President, the head of the armies, has accepted the resignation presented by army General Bruno Cuche, head of the land army," said a statement from Sarkozy's office.
Cuche answers to a higher-ranking officer in charge of the overall armed forces. Sarkozy is the ultimate head of the armed forces in France.
The incident occurred during a military show by the Third Marine Parachute regiment, open to the public in the southern French town of Carcassonne. The soldier has been questioned by police.
The wounded were mostly members of the public who had been watching the soldiers simulate an attack and included a 3-year-old boy who was hit in the heart and in the arm.
The condition of the boy had stabilised after doctors performed an operation.
