I checked my search button and your Bio.

Lion, It is a question solved usually in team and unit SOPs concerning vectors of fire positions in movement order etc. The first best reasoning is pointed in the dirction of your move related to your sector of fire. You are looking for best reaction time. That is to say if you sector is to the right and you are a right hander your head and muzzle are facing different directions, you would need to switch to left hand carry.
Mostly, "at the ready" barrel forward and not directly on the man in front of you. safe levels based on alert levels, finger off the trigger until engaging... Also as a Marine I would thought that would have been in your training. Blitz
