Space Force unveils its Guardians Ideal to fine-tune hiring

The Space Force is touting new processes aimed at avoiding bureaucratic bottlenecks

The U.S. Space Force is rolling out a set of new talent management processes it says will help avoid the bureaucratic bottlenecks that so often plague federal agencies, and improve both the hiring and retention of personnel, known in the service as guardians.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. "Jay" Raymond unveiled on Monday the Guardian Ideal, which the newest branch of the U.S. military said is

"the Space Force’s foundational document outlining the service’s boundary-pushing, innovative approach to talent management, from accession to development, and it combines aspirations with actions and milestones."

The notional primary goal of the exercise is to rescue the civilian vessel Kobayashi Maru in a simulated battle with the Klingons. The disabled ship is located in the Klingon Neutral Zone, and any Starfleet ship entering the zone would cause an interstellar border incident. The approaching cadet crew must decide whether to attempt a rescue of the Kobayashi Maru crew—endangering their own ship and lives—or leave the Kobayashi Maru to certain destruction.

If the cadet chooses to attempt a rescue, the simulation is designed to guarantee that the cadet's ship will have absolutely no chance of winning, escaping, negotiating, or surviving.
