Smokin Joe, I'm not sure about LEO's in different states, but tasers are not allowed to civilians. Victoria and South Australian LEO's now have them, and I think other state govts are trialling them.

Huey14, only automatics were totally banned. Pistols, rifles, shotties and semi's are still allowed, but under strict rules for their use.

The many and varied reasons for obtaining a licence include target/sport shooting, hunting, primary industry, collecting etc, with different levels of rules applicable to each type of licence.

So the very nice and helpful man reminded me that of course I will also be going rabbit hunting at home in QLD, so will need the hunting licence. The rabbits are really bad out home way...

Then there is the mandatory training course you must attend to qualify, the limits to what you can buy in the first 12 mths of the licence, the cooling off periods, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah...
