I would imagine that it would be very difficult for a politician to play games with a nomination considering our national mood. I am sure some sniping will occur from the margins but I actually think most of them are smart enough to listen to their pollsters when they tell them the public won't tolerate much BS from them right now.
Edited to add: It is also helpful that the President just completed the process several months ago. He should have a couple names that have already been vetted and considered when he picked Judge Roberts.

Roberts is a bit more centrist than I would like to see in Rehnquist's replacement, and he is encountering heavy opposition.
Not sure if he will be able to get a more conservative nominee approved, if Roberts reception is the current norm.
