I hate to bring politics into it but it is impossbile to ignore the elephant in the room but Rehnquist's passing and the after effects of Katrina might actually help the President.
I would imagine that it would be very difficult for a politician to play games with a nomination considering our national mood. I am sure some sniping will occur from the margins but I actually think most of them are smart enough to listen to their pollsters when they tell them the public won't tolerate much BS from them right now.
Edited to add: It is also helpful that the President just completed the process several months ago. He should have a couple names that have already been vetted and considered when he picked Judge Roberts.
