But, I would think for a guardsman with prior AF service it would make sense to sign with a guard group such as the 2/20th and work with their Det-1 program, then go to 11B school and attend SFAS when the cadre determine you are adequately prepared.

NO, Rep 63 & 18X are not similar. Rep 63 allows civilians to be in a
National Guard unit & train with them before they go to BCT. Once a slot is open then they go.
The 18X program is an
Active Duty program where civilians sign up for a 5-Year Active Duty contract. They get sent to BCT, AIT, SOPC, Airborne School & SFAS. If they are not selected, they are assigned to an infantry unit to serve out the rest of their 5-Year Active Duty obligation.
