Not sure what you have in mind. What I found doesnt really fit the profile of auspicious day for LATAM terrorism.
May 1 1961, Antuilo Ramierez Ortiz forced a National Airlines plane to Cuba (previously, hijackings had been the other way around, cuba to US). He returned to US in 1975 and was sentenced to 20 years for air piracy under new legislation signed by JFK in late 1961.
The next successful hijacking of a US commercial airplane was in 1968. Also to Cuba.
also of note: on May 1 1960 a U2 spyplane was shot down over Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) by a Soviet missile, and the pilot Francis Gary Powers was captured, but exchanged for 21 months later.
